Description
Basic running sequence practiceAs I noticed that 5 frames weren't quite enough, I tried 8 frames instead. However, I drew only 4 and then mirrored them to save time and effort. Now that I used the additional frames for slowing down the movement towards extreme positions, I could make the change of the movement direction smoother.
Sayaka was kind enough to run on treadmill for me.
Frames drawn on Paint Tool Sai
Animated in Adobe Photoshop CS4

I think you should move her hips side by side more because It doesn't look like she is shifting her weight enough to support her body.
I think you could have delayed her hair a bit more and it's flow could be better. The hair in key frame number 3 should have a more exaggerated S shape I think and at 4 it looks like it's actually going backwards which is absurd, it should be going to the other side.
And one more thing, who flips his arms when running like that? Have you tried running with your arms like this?
Overall it looks good though. You got it.

it is stiff in thein the hips and legs, there's no gap between the legs or anything, the hair is great th wrists could be a little more loose for natural feel but this is good as is and with a bra they would resist more..

Just would like to point out that there is a gap between thighs... hence the existence of word "thigh gap"...

Good, but as a woman i can confirm that even without a bra, that's not what boobs do when we run...or our arms for that matter...good legs and waist movement though, and I'm loving the hair.

It's pretty impressive if they can catch up walking XD
I run uniquely too tho
I think it can best be compared to the girl from Whisper of the Heart (I think that's the right Ghibli character I'm thinking of) when I'm not sprinting

I wanted to express the personality of the character trough her body language. Sayaka isn't athlete or athletic in anyway. From artistic point of view, I wanted to exaggerate this feature of hers, because exaggeration is the method to bring the message clearly to the audience. I do hope you don't consider this as an insult.

daffyneko In reply to Nsio [2014-09-18 21:04:09 +0000 UTC]
No, I didn't take it as an insult I just feared that some kind of stereotype had spoiled your judgement. I am not athletic and I really don't run like that. But if you say this is her personnality then, I don't have anything to say, it's your character, your point of view so it's okay

Nsio In reply to daffyneko [2014-09-19 04:42:09 +0000 UTC]
Well I can't say that my character design is completely devoid of such stereotypes.
What I have gathered during my years of art practice, I have noticed that art usually tap into things likes stereo- and archetypes. For example, ancient sculptures about women had wide hips and large breasts. Those exaggerations are there to tell about their fertility, not about them being fat and big. There are many ways to exaggerate the attributes of the subject in art. Owl is considered wise, fox is cunning, Man is strong. And girl is weak.
Now that really sounds rather negative attribute, I do admit that. But being weak doesn't have to be considered as a negative attribute. I myself view it as tenderness that make women beautiful and unique in comparison to men. How girls run in art and how they run in reality doesn't have to look exactly the same. Although the way she runs isn't quite realistic, the connotation people have makes the animation feel like it was more real than reality itself (now that's the goal of art, but I may not be quite there yet). That's why art is so different. If I would want to depict things super realistically, I would take photos instead.

daffyneko In reply to Nsio [2014-09-21 20:12:20 +0000 UTC]
Oh you can use as many stereotypes as you like. And, hum, girls AREN'T weak. Not all of them. I like strong women characters and it hurts when I see only weak girls. It's like the world is telling me "You can't be strong because you're a girl. You will always be weak and you will never be able to defend yourself, you're not free and you have to bear children". This is why I overreact when I see stereotyped women characters. But autors have to be free and create any character they like so it's okay with Sayaka Sorry for my overreaction.

Everyone pretty much said already what I was gonna point out with the legs. almost feels like alternating skipping. BUT I think the hair-swishing is very natural and cool! The upper body also feels really nice watching it in motion. All in all, another work that is successful. I particularly like the attention to key frames.
pffft, you made her run on a treadmill? lol at least she's getting some exercise xD
π: 0 β©: 1
Nsio In reply to ShinguAmito [2014-09-16 03:59:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I just should have shown the feet on ground on two frames, then I think it would have worked. Possibly. The hair looks pretty good, though there is this blinking strand of hair that annoys me. The illusion of movement doesn't quite work there.
She has been eating cakes with Jill a bit too much lately, so as her personal trainer, I gotta make sure she does at least the minimum amount of exercise to keep her body in check xD

Ooh, nice! Hm, maybe the next practice in you animations if tweening. Though for short, little animations like this it's not necessary. It would probably be used in full range motions like a character spinning. There's your next challenge~
π: 0 β©: 1
Nsio In reply to BlackThornRose [2014-09-14 19:41:06 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I'll focus on tweening later. For now the most important thing is to get the understanding about key frames, the frames that really count. I want to keep the number of frames low in order to minimize the efforts, to find efficient ways of creating the illusion of motion and to figure out the issues in my understanding before I start doing anything too laborious. So for the time being, my animations will be rather rough
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackThornRose In reply to Nsio [2014-09-14 22:12:35 +0000 UTC]
Lol I understand. No need to create more work for yourself but at least you're already knowledgeable of the technique. It is necessary for rough animations like this, I still think it looks great with only the key frames in place. You're doing great~!

I have no idea about animation, but I thought she looks kinda stiff. Β Like a safety rope was tied around her and she's hanging by it.
Better animation than I could ever hope to do but I thought I'd put in my .02 cents. Β If this comment is unnecessary, you can hide it.

Nsio In reply to JHTriune [2014-09-14 18:06:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the illusion of running isn't quite working right. It indeed looks like she doesn't touch the ground (the visual cues to create that illusion are weak).Β But well, it's often easier for me to see how things should be done after doing them wrong first. I'll definitely keep this in mind.
Your comment isn't unnecessary, you are just pointing out what you truly see.
