Upon more thinking, too, it doesn't account for the type of deviation and how that can effect popularity; a deviation in the photography or anime gallery is much more likely to garner views and/or favs than something in artisan crafts for example. For the second equation you showed (favs/views) that shouldn't effect it much since less popular galleries get less view AND less favorites, but when you start square rooting your views it would start to play in.
Also, it doesn't account for the concept of viral sharing; some deviations 'get lucky' and are found and shared, and shared by the right people who have influence. Of course it could be argued that the probably have influence because they have a good eye, but we all know that's not always the case It would be interesting if you could figure out a way to factor that in.
Not really being critical or telling you to figure it out or anything; you just got me thinking and I'm musing out loud

Hi, thanks for these feedbacks, I'm simply glad this article makes you thinking about the subject!
To reply to your thoughts, of course my formula is clearly not perfect (obviously, there can't be a perfect formula to rank artworks), however it can be adapted to a wide type of galleries by changing the "p" parameter... This flexibility is interesting in my opinion.

True... I suppose if you REALLY want to get into it, you can find the average views and favs of the top, say, 10 deviations in a particular gallery and find some way to compare yours to those, that way you're weighting your deviation scores to the gallery... But that all sounds like work and I just like pretty pictures

Very interesting mathematical concept. While it, of course, is missing the "x-factors" that emotions play (yours, mostly, in this case), it is a good objective way to start analyzing your gallery. Nicely done!
