How did I miss this? Hmm I don't see an "s" in the s wrinkles.. I just see more elaborate fan....

Obi-quiet In reply to silverbeam [2010-03-02 20:08:43 +0000 UTC]

When I say "S" curve, it starts curving one way at the top, and then the opposite way at the bottom. It's not an actual shape so much as a line. Sorry if that was confusing.

"S" curves tend to show movement and they make said movement look very flowing. I totally haven't emphasized them enough in my tutorials...I shall fix that.

[link] That's the one that goes most into S curves.

Nice job! I'd say the only thing is to make the wrinkles a little bigger. Don't be afraid of them, you know? Just shoot them in there as far as you want it to go.

Huge, HUGE help. <3 This is the best tutorial on clothing I've seen. *will be sure to integrate some of this in her next drawing*

And actually, it seems that Kishimoto's gotten really lazy with his art. Especially the upper torso/arm area... :/ But I guess that's what happens when you try to rush things... (Poor Deidara's arms in Chapter 362...)

Obi-quiet In reply to DandelionPoof [2009-02-13 21:52:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, he's also a minimalist when it comes to wrinkles (and he's really good at it too), so I'd say it's more of a style thing, plus just because this is a basic rule, doesn't mean that it would apply to every piece of clothing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DandelionPoof In reply to Obi-quiet [2009-02-14 12:22:09 +0000 UTC]

Nah, not talking about clothing, talking about anatomy. 0_o There's something seriously off about the girth of Deidara's arms as opposed to his upper body/shoulder area, visible when his shirt's completely off. I don't know... I've heard that Shueisha actually pushed for Shipuuden before he was ready to do it. And it really has taken a toll on the art, and especially the plot. I still love the characters, and the Akatsuki are amazing in all their freakish glory, but I think that if he'd been allowed to work at his own pace it would have been a lot better.

Both this and your previous clothing tutorials have been very helpful ^_^ However, I'm still a little lost in finding the wrinkles. Like, I know what you mean, but when looking for them, I'm having a difficult time actually seeing where they are :/

But otherwise, awesome work C:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obi-quiet In reply to ShimaGenki [2009-01-12 02:24:23 +0000 UTC]

It's something that comes along with time. Seriously, the next time you're in class or a job or something and you're bored, look at the clothing around you and see if you can reproduce the wrinkles and find similarities. It helps a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShimaGenki In reply to Obi-quiet [2009-01-12 17:34:16 +0000 UTC]

I have a few times, but I'll probably take more time to stare and really observe them.

But thanks a lot, this is super helpful. Wrinkles have always been something that I've had a hard time drawing (as I'm sure the case is the same with a lot of people.)

i realized something sorta disturbing when i had to go to the bathroom in the middle of reading this thing, i could use the streach marks on my thigh as a guid for drawing wrinkle for pants 0_0 ... i'm still trying to firgure out why exacly i even HAVE streachmarks there, i have a pretty good idea, but still, wait, did i just go on a mini rant?

Finally got around to looking at this thing...

This was great! Clearer than the other one was, I think. I'm not sure you really need to actually define each and every kind of wrinkle (that just seems to make it a bit more confusing) but whatever.

One thing, though. I can understand why you'd be uncomfortable about drawing the crotch on people (I assume that's what you were talking about, anyway) but mentioning it as frequently as you did only drew attention to what you were avoiding. I think if you hadn't mentioned the fact that you were uncomfortable with it, then no one probably would've noticed. Especially the part where you moved onto men's pants. This is obviously a tutorial for educational purposes, so of course no one will be offended. If you don't say anything, I'm willing to bet no one would think anything of it anyway. Be business-like and treat it professionally and it would be better, I think. I do know what you mean, though. I went for a lot of years avoiding drawing men, especially below the waist, but then I realized I was being silly and just learned how to draw proper pants.

Oh yeah, and I think it would've been helpful to mention that jeans (especially shorts, like the ones in that picture) tend to get "stuck" in certain wrinkles that happen frequently. Using that picture as an example, I'd bet that if those shorts were ironed flat and the girl put them on standing up, they'd have a lot less wrinkles in them than what you see. They don't seem especially tight, so those wrinkles must come from when she sits down and the fabric rides up and folds a LOT. As a result of frequent leg-bending, that denim got stuck with those wrinkles. Gravity doesn't have a chance at that mess. XD D'you see what I mean, though?

And...umm..."direct thrust" seems like a BAD choice of words for that kind of wrinkle. Especially since it's introduced right beside that particular picture. Just thought I ought to say something...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obi-quiet In reply to mormongirlbyu [2008-12-01 00:21:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've had a LOT of people (I can name quite a few off the top of my head) tell me that they're uncomfortable drawing crotches (okay, that just sounds weird), and I used to be like that. I wanted to draw attention to that because I want people who are uncomfortable with it to realize it's not that bad.

I'm hopefully going to be working on "stuck" wrinkles at a later time, which is why I didn't mention it now (not to mention that this was already really long).

The "Direct thrust" type of wrinkles I got directly from a book...dang, I should reference that book...it's amazing. I can see your point, but I can't come up with anything else to call them.

Thanx hon!

mormongirlbyu In reply to Obi-quiet [2008-12-01 04:43:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know how that is, I used to be that way too, but maybe you could just say something along those lines just once and leave it at that. Professional-like, yes?

M'kay, just wondering if you were gonna talk about it. I think jeans are the biggest perpitrators of stuck wrinkles, especially around the knees and hips, which is why I brought it up here.

M'kay. I didn't know if that was something you made up or not. What book, though? It does sound good.
