Description This was done in Photoshop as my attempt to get as close to 3D as I could within the confines of this 2D program. For those of you just now looking at this deviation, this is the second iteration of the description. I'm changing it now so that it will link to my writing deviation.

all done in photoshop?? so it isn't 3d? I'm still impressed though. There needs to be a little depth on the covers. The cover has the same thickness of the pages.

Hehe, I didn't think about the cover thickness. Yeah, it's not true 3D. I'm trying to see how close to 3D I can get within Photoshop. Mostly just because I'm already trying to get better at more things than I can handle as it is... I suck at managing my time lol.

I do have a couple 3D programs on my computer for when I decide to go that direction though.

Thanks . I have 3d Studio MX and Inventor . I haven't played around with Studio much but I know I'll be much more comfortable in Inventor since I played around in CAD a few years ago... which was a VERY easy program to learn.

^^ you should download a trial version of zbrush from [link] and mess around with it. I have a feeling you could do wonders with it. Its kinda like sculpting with clay ^^ very cool. I personally use maya, but since I am having my little contest I am downloading zbrush near the end so that I can add finishing touches to my model. trial only lasts 30 days.. thats why.

Have you used 3D Studio before? I'm just wondering so I know which you think would be better. Inventor is mostly an engineering program so once I do learn a different 3D program I probably won't be using Inventor for too many things.

Thanks for the program link, I'll try it out soon .

well.. I honestly prefer the controls of maya, and it also includes absolutely everything that you need to create, texture, rig, light, animate, render, and add effects to whatever you are working on. I've worked with 3ds once. But I was so used to maya that I quickly turned tail and ran back to my precious program. Its all based on preference of modeling tools. They basically do similar things.. just in much different ways. 3ds is used more for game base, but because of allias changing things up a bit, maya models can now be used for games and film. there are a lot of really good tutorials out there if you want to learn really fast, in both programs. I suggest going to [link] for tutorials and information on all 3 programs.

Oh, I didn't realise Maya was from Alias. When I asked around about different things for my convertable notebook someone suggested I get Sketchbook pro, which is also an Alias product. It's very inexpensive so I'm planning to get it after I've re-stocked my bank account .

By the looks of that site, it seems like it would be best to learn both... so Max will be first for me then Maya.

Photoshop isn't all that difficult, it's the traditional art experience that makes the good artists what they are... I think. This book picture for instance. It was simple, the only thing that took any time at all to do was getting the pieces to line up. But then again, I'm not all that great yet anyway so it's not the best example lol.

Yeah but that was awesome and required a bit of traditional techniques didn't it? Basically everything I've done is heavy on the filters and blending layers lol. It's all software and VERY little traditional skill. I'll take classes to fix that problem though .

ah! I see. mine was a couple of layers. skin, hair, clothing, makeup. thats it.. with a base of 100% opacity and each additional layer a smaller opacity. ^^ taking classes is always fun.
