Description I don't know what took me so long to upload this. I livestreamed the creation of Leroy and his battle cry earlier today, so a few of you got to see the magic happen (must've been like the rabbit falling out of the hat live on stage). So this is the drawing I came up with for my three hundredth deviation last week. The picture originally said "This is Deviantart" but my brother (the official writer of Same Apartment) said it would be funnier with "Art-a!" See that's why he's the official writer. In italics.

Now if you'll excuse me I have some things to draw. Random things. Scary things..

The one thing that bothers me about this picture is the background. There’s no doubt it’s not highly detailed or in-depth landscape, but just intended a plain background to go with a plain character illustration. However, it still holds enough detail to show a visible effort from the artist’s side.

The problem is then, that the background interferes with the characterβ€˜s coloring and makes it hard for the eye to separate the character from said background. At first glance, I didn’t even notice he had a cape because the cape blended so much in with the colors splatter effects near it. The red-brown fur also suffers from this problem, but slight. The only color that defines his form is his white fur, as the remaining fur simply blends too much into the background to show clear shape.

In addition, the brown splatter effects used near the character are more detailed than the character himself (high quality brush?), and a background shouldn’t be more detailed than the main motive. It only steals focus away when viewing in detail, and in this case, creates a confusing outline for the character.

I would still like to give you props for the cartoony style and artistic coloring.

Hey that's cool that you took the time out to do a critique. Leroy is my oldest character and it's always nice to have an outside input on him. I really should've taken more time on this one, but you know how it is when you want to get a picture done quickly and so Leroy has to suffer for a quickly done bg (I wonder how a transparent color fill would affect the background?). You hit the nail on the head with the high quality brush comment. I actually remembered I had that brush when I realized that Leroy blended in too much with the background so I plopped it in there at the last minute. Maybe I'll do the next "splatter" background like this with those brushes, it could form more of a cohesive version.
I'm just glad you didn't comment on the fact the texture in the background on this is the same granite texture I put in the Terminator picture, just flipped over.. Even I thought I was lazy there.

I don't blame you one bit for finding quick solutions, especially when working during a LiveStream. Part of cartooning is reusing old backgrounds to save time, so it was a creative solution to flip an older background to fit.

I could also criticize anatomy, shading, and so on, but I don’t think you weighted those in this picture. Rather, I just try and focus on what seems to be the motive and what elements in the picture could have been done better to bring it out. I am fairly new at posting critique, so if you have any complaints or requests regarding my critique, feel free to bitch at me all you want.

It's more a question of what you want an opinion on in the picture.

eh, not so much really. But it's bigger than I usually work, so its got some nicer brushstrokes.

I like the brushstrokes, adds detail, even if they really aren't meant for the picture.

He somehow looks less fierce than the Sparta guy. I don't think fighting to the death would be Leroy's style. More likely he'd be using Arthur's battlecry.

Wasn't that David Yost's battle cry too?

Y'know, I had to wiki to find out who that was. Now I'm glad I didn't possess that knowledge.

hehe, I just said that because when they came out with the Super Nintendo version of the original Power Rangers, the blue ranger was not only the only fat one, but when he punched he would cover his face at the same time. Obscure, sure. But that's how I like it!
