Its really nice. Too bad that i'm too much of a beiginner to understand this. Ex: "How do i airbrush with such prescision of contours", or "I'm totally blank on the merging of the layers".
Fave just the same though. I can only dream that someday, I'll have advanced enough for this to help me.
Thankseez you!

wow thats really neat
how long does it take you to make a digital painting like that?
and what edition of photoshop are you using

Mizzy-chan In reply to Mizzy-chan [2007-12-29 17:18:23 +0000 UTC]
thats not that bad for timing
and that rather neat how your still using photopaint, you don't always have to get the biggest and baddest painting software out there!

SOmething like this, meaning roughing out, drawing inking and colouring will take about two days to do depending on whether or not the client has revisions.
I use Corel Photopaint 8, which first came out in 1997, its ancient and still works.

Thanks so much for taking time out of your schedule to afford this to artists aspiring to be better in their craft. This is really great.
If you're still taking questions, I guess I would be interested in seeing the shading stage broken out in detail. Can you provide any quick tips on how to address that stage?
I've never tried airbrushing so I have no idea what a classic airbrush style might be. If you ever have the opportunity and are willing to share that with us, I know we'd all be grateful.
Thanks again and all the best!

Thank you so much for this tutorial.
I've always found my way of colouring to be time-consuming and extremely troubling but I think this one may be easier for me.
I'm really grateful for your contribution. Thank you!

Very cool tutorial. I found it interesting that you do the rough on the computer, then print it out, and so on. The only thing I got a bit confused on was part 7 (shading).

"WA! Sugoi!"
I must say, this tutorial was superb. I saved this and will be referring to some of these tips in the future when I color some of my pictures.
I found it interesting how few layers you use to color.
Anyways:

This is definitely one of the BEST tutorials on DA. Thank you SO much. I've been wondering how you color your characters for a LONG time now.
I do have one question though. Could you elaborate more on the masking step? I understand that you shade in black and white but I'm not sure I understand how you get the colors onto each part. Do you just lasso-select each section and then Color Balance it? That part had me a bit confused.

Omar-Dogan In reply to sfox8 [2007-12-24 04:08:35 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, well what i do is i select the colour i want to tint the shade of by going to the FLATS layer and then i turn off alll the layers except for the FLATS layer. This way you will have a totally unobstructed view of that layer. It is important the flats are done right for this reason: if you have done a clean job you can pick the colour that way by just using the WAND mask tool.
Then with the are selected, you simply turn all the layer back on and go to your SHADE layer and start the tinting, and so on.
Hope that helps!

I am irony's bitch.

About scanners, Omar, the one you recommended to me?
There's something weird: The other side of the scanning glass is fogged over. Any idea why? (It does not appear to affect scan quality too much, however.)

Mine has a little bit of that action too, i have no idea why, but yeah it hasnt affected my scans either.

Thank you so much for posting this. The piece you chose for this has been one of my all time favourites from you too so I was really happy I got to see your process for this.
This past semester I was a TA for a digital painting class at school (I got the gig without even applying. Isabelle just appointed me for it, and I was pretty happy just to be able to take the course for free without getting paid) and the things discussed there were very similar. There is no magic to it though there are some basics on how to use the software that have to be learned. I think the most useful thing I'm seeing in a lot of tutorials including yours is the "painting in B&W" deal before adding the colours. It's like how we do it in monochrome in figure drawing.
I hope you're having a good holiday season with family and friends. See you in January at school, perhaps?

Arigatou gozaimasu, kono pic wa muzukashii deshita.
Hope you have a good holiday too! I wont be showing up at school potentially for a very long time! I have too many jobs that i need to do right now, and that 3D class made me appreciate my 2D art so much more. I have no desire at all for 3D, but it was fun to learn though!
Its more challenging to make 2D look 3D!
take care!-

I'll miss seeing you around but I totally understand your descision. I feel the same way now in terms of appreciating 2d. I missed drawing so much this past term though I tried to do it as often as time permitted. I don't toally hate Maya but I'm gonna try and see where it takes me.
Good luck with your jobs~!!

Plus you use color tinting REALLY well
So gratz! Good Tutorial!

WOW! OMG You are a god! I had always wondered how is it that you made your characters so lifelike and 3d depthness. I never knew about the drawing the Character shading the way you did it. I had used a similar technique but it was only to change the hue and get an easy way out for choosing colors. Amazing tutorial man. Definately a +fav.

i've got along way to go before i can utilize things like htis (not to mention i need real photoshop, not just photoshop elements)
anyways, thanks for this. i need to try and spend alot of time thinking on a drawing versus doing it really quick like i tend to do. Discipline discipline discipline! ^^
