Description
The social differences of Brazil being reflected and shown in a single photo. This one illustrates a huge problem of my country: there are many slums in our cities, and they happen everywhere.
These unusual urban occupation of the urban space are often near the noble neighborhoods, and people are really poor. Here in Brazil we have to live with enormous economic differences between people almost always. There are people in the streets asking for money, lots of homeless people and criminality. It's interesting to think that the only difference between them is only the side they were born, although they have completely different lifes... Interesting thing to think about. We have to get used to have our cars "taken care" by people in streets (anywhere you park your car there is always a person asking for money to look at your car to see if someone would steal it, when it's more probable that the "street security guards" themselves do that), to see slums and people living with awful conditions, to see poorness every corner...
It's also interesting to see the picture in a different perspective. Try to hide with your hand one of the sides of the picture then the other, and see that there's almost two worlds colliding there, side by side, even the clouds are separated if you notice. I doubt that one could tell they are that close if they weren't at the same photo.
I present to you people, the third world.

I can understand why this got a DD. There are similar contrasts all over the world. This is a picture of human greed. One side of the image lives in luxury and allows the other side to live in poverty.
I'm not suggesting they should give half their collective wealth away, the answer is never that simple. However, they could do something about it and they won't. That's how human beings work.
Whatever people think about the division it illustrates so effectively, it's a thought provoking image.

Thank you, I'm glad that you like the image but mostly, that it made you think.
That's sad, but that's reality and you are right. Human beings work like that.

This is a very bold exercise. Awesome!
Btw someone brought about the same comparison between El Paso Texas in the US and Cd. Juarez in Mexico and therein lies another difference between poor and rich communities living side to side from each other: violence. Ciudad Juarez in Mexico is the most violent place on earth nowadays with people dying by the thousands each year. El paso, is one of the US safest cities.
I suppose the same difference applies to the favelas and the residential neighborhoods around them.

oO-Rein-Oo In reply to gammada [2010-04-22 16:56:44 +0000 UTC]
That's true. The favelas are violent in contrast to the other neighborhoods of the city, but sometimes they get in shock and ppl get murdered etc but the major problem of those places here in Brazil is the drug traffic...

gammada In reply to oO-Rein-Oo [2010-04-24 17:09:04 +0000 UTC]
Same old story here. We're supposed to be under a "drug war" that so far has claimed 22,000 lives in just the three short years since it was launched by President Calderon. And we're not talking only about gunshots, we're talking decapitated bodies, people hung from bridges, folks burned alive inside metal containers and many other atrocities.
That's very sad in my opinion.

this reminds me of the area i live in. This exactly how it is between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico. A city split by a border of nationalities and poverty. This is an amazing picture, but it is sad to know that it is like this all over the world.

So I'll be honest, I was sort of daydreaming when I clicked on the thumbnail for this and I couldn't really tell at all what was happening in the photo. And then I hit fullview, and I said aloud, "WOW!!"
It really just hit me. This is striking. It astounds (and depresses) me that this shot even exists. Beautifully executed, this photograph moves me.
