Description The social differences of Brazil being reflected and shown in a single photo.

This one illustrates a huge problem of my country: there are many slums in our cities, and they happen everywhere.

These unusual urban occupation of the urban space are often near the noble neighborhoods, and people are really poor. Here in Brazil we have to live with enormous economic differences between people almost always. There are people in the streets asking for money, lots of homeless people and criminality. It's interesting to think that the only difference between them is only the side they were born, although they have completely different lifes... Interesting thing to think about. We have to get used to have our cars "taken care" by people in streets (anywhere you park your car there is always a person asking for money to look at your car to see if someone would steal it, when it's more probable that the "street security guards" themselves do that), to see slums and people living with awful conditions, to see poorness every corner...

It's also interesting to see the picture in a different perspective. Try to hide with your hand one of the sides of the picture then the other, and see that there's almost two worlds colliding there, side by side, even the clouds are separated if you notice. I doubt that one could tell they are that close if they weren't at the same photo.

I present to you people, the third world.

After finding "The Line", I've fallen in love with your gallery.

Really powerful shot. It left me with a strong sense of uneasiness. It made me think of the extremes found in our society and how sad that is.

Yeah, I could see by the comments here that it happens everywhere indeed, but the differences are basically on the intensity that it happens... Thanks

chouzan-photography In reply to oO-Rein-Oo [2009-03-31 19:04:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes that is certainly true! There is a high intensity in too many places, sadly. South America, India, and China to name a few. Again, nice photo!

we have similar issues here, but alot of the rich hide in our country.

to me, the area on the right looks like there's less pressure. i can imagine the hustle and bustle of the area on the left.

very awesome photo.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you dug it deep. Issues like this are everywhere but less pronounced in the rich countries, more "hidden" like you said... Sad reality, though.

Tell me about it, I'm from Indonesia, and poorness mix in with richness. You can have a really rich, big mansion amidst poor housings.

True, here is the same, huge monumental buildings side by side with small little houses with poor conditions. Everything on the same place... It's sad.

This picture really is a profound POV showing the stark contrast between the cushy life so many of us enjoy, compared with the harsh life so many more suffer right under our noses, largely ignored. I bet this would get into National Geographic if you submitted it.

oO-Rein-Oo In reply to fuelie [2009-03-13 13:06:22 +0000 UTC]

I've just submitted it to the National Geographic as you suggested, lets see what happens
I'm glad that I could make such a picture to show those differences and that you have dug it deep. I do agree with what you said, I bet everyone does... Sad reality, unfortunately.

You got a billion comments and a thousand so favs on this already, but HAve to say, its a fabulous comparison. They are 2 worlds but what can you say, without the slum there would be anyone to provide services to the metropolis. They are dependent and the rich will always fight to keep the poor poor so that they can maintain their way of lifestyle. That's something that also happens on a global level between first world and third world countries.

BTW, did you have to use a ND filter. The water is so calm.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oO-Rein-Oo In reply to geolio [2009-02-20 17:16:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they both need each other to exist I think. The poor supports the rich in a way, like you said... Sad but true, and it happens everywhere, some places with more intensity and some with less.
I didn't use any filters, naked lens... I did observe the place for weeks to find out the best time for reflections and light, also the position of the clouds... It was a hard shot. Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it!
