Description
[Edit]First, a quote from the Codex:
"They give live birth to their young who are capable of eating solid food from the moment they are born. Drell appearance is very similar to asari and humans..." This should explain the breasts, though I might create an alternative one day.
To feminize her I extended the red gill-like things on her neck starting from halfway on her jawline. Also, I thought of cobras when I saw the back of Thane's head so I decided to extend that part of the head, which I call the hood.
[/Edit]
Combined version 1 and 2 of my female drell design. I forgot to include the horn thingies on her head but I think it's a good thing... I like the sleekness ^_^
Anyhoo, this was fun and I hope you like it. ^_^
Paint Tool Sai
I love to color but sometimes I wonder if the colors I'm using are what I perceive them to be because my monitor might not be properly calibrated.

Yay! This is exciting. I'm very curious to see the female of such species like the Drell, Turians, and Krogan.
Also, I do adore the coloring and her dress. Very nice. The red and the green look beautiful together.

Yeah, I really wish they would include the females of all the species (or at least the party member species).
Thank you I got the idea for the color of the dress from the neck. All the colors I used are based on Thane. ^^

Lovely piece. I love the colours and composition
I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but it makes me think of something Frank Frazetta (RIP) would make. I mean that as a compliment

Sleek indeed! Very nice painting. She has little horns on her head, and they work--they look almost like hair clips.
Your monitor requires some calibrations? You should get Garrus on that.

Drell are from an arid planet so I was thinking... Sand, earth... Ok, no idea how to draw/paint sand so earthy will do.

Woaw she looks stunning and I like how all the color tones blend so well together.
I do think that her throat is a bit too elaborate compared to Thane's, usually with reptiles the males are far more colorful for display reasons than the females who have more toned down color schemes. But this is an alien race and I'm basically just nitpicking on nothing so see as some personal critique and nothing more

Thank you
Haha, I tend to nitpick too. The color scheme I used is the same as Thanes (eye-drop tool + modifications). Thane doesn't seem to be too colorful so maybe there are different... er.. breeds of drells? Just the same way that some species of reptiles are multi-colored and have different patterns while some are only one solid color. For some reptiles, like crocodiles and pythons I think, the difference between male and female is size and not color or pattern. ^_^
It's like the breast argument: reptiles by definition have no mammary glands and therefore have no breasts. They lay eggs too. But like you said, drells are an alien race. They don't lay eggs and they don't leave their children after laying the eggs (lots of reptiles do I believe). So, I included the breasts again.
Critiques are always welcome ^_^

Ah I should have been more clear and referred to lizards instead of reptiles, snakes and crocodiles are a different branch from the lizards in the reptile family but yes the majority does not boast with colors like the lizards do. (size does matter in this case )
Interesting fact that is was not mentioned anywhere if Drell are live born or hatched from a egg, some reptiles actually take care for their young when out of the egg and in the meantime fiercely defend the nest. I wonder if they will ever cover that information, I mean hey Salarians have that type of reproduction system, could be the same for Drell.
Anyways, too much jabbering.....Back to the excellent drawing!

Ah true. But from what I remember, drell are "reptile-like" and not lizard-like. ^_^
Yeah, that's why I said a lot and not all (I try not to deal in absolutes). Crocs or was it alligators.. or both... they protect their young I think. Also, quoting from the Codex: "They give live birth to their young... drell appearance are similar to asari and humans." ^_^
Haha, thanks again

Is that so? Then MassEffectWikia is not really up to date, I checked that just to be sure, might as well re-read the codex on the Drell.
Thanks for the correction

Interesting concept of a female Drell, what prompted you to do the elongated throat? I do like the nice earth tones you used throughout.

pic-char In reply to north-green [2010-06-11 15:54:07 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure if it's as visible here as in the lineart, but I only elongated from around half of the jaw to the the end. I don't know why I did that though, the idea just popped up in my head. ^_^
Basically I extended the hood first because I thought of king cobras. I extended the neck part to match the hood. I was probably thinking of female quarians and their suit hoods when I did the gills (yeah, that's what I call them even if they aren't because they kind of look like gills to me). Even after I had the idea, I was a bit hesitant to draw it that way because I paused to think if it would be difficult to render/model. Then of course I remembered that quarians have their hoods and Miranda has her long hair. Besides, this was for fun so I just drew it anyway.
All that - the idea, the hesitation and me deciding to draw the idea anyway probably occurred in a couple of seconds, each thought overlapping with the other.
Sorry for the long reply, and thank you ^_^. I would have loved to draw the drell home planet before it was destroyed but I can't draw backgrounds (for now). So I just made dark earthy dust clouds.

Hmmm I had to look at it again to notice the half jaw thing, I'm guessing the problem of shrinking the artwork. The hood/throat combination seems to me to mimic long hair, which helps get a feminine look to her. I find it works well.
Frankly I'm glad you expanded on why you drew her that way, makes for an interesting view behind the process.

pic-char In reply to north-green [2010-06-13 19:38:45 +0000 UTC]
Haha, you summarized it better than I did. Yeah, my goal was to mimic long hair. With that said though, I don't think that all the female drells look exactly like this. Some could have different hoods and different neck thingies or other ornamentation. ^_^

Well, usually I'm home too, except Wednesdays (meeting with Dr. S. for my self-directed studies) and Fridays IF I have meetings (usually I go out Fridays anyway, though). Otherwise I just do my work at home.
We could figure out a day! That would be awesome, especially since I'm kicking myself more and more to drawing SOMETHING everyday!
