I've ALWAYS adored the uniforms of the soldiers in the wizard of Oz. The wicked witch of the West has them parade outside her castle.

They were playing it on TV today, and I remember thinking to myself "this isn't very Christmas like"... but it was good anyway. I've always liked the wizard of Oz. Never read the book though, it seems sort of out there to me. Although I DO know that in the original book, Dorothy's slippers were actually SILVER, instead of ruby. The reason being that the author, L. Frank Baum, had intended the silver slippers to represent the question of the US economy at the time. The matter of tender was in question, and there was arguments going on about whether the money should be based on silver and gold, or gold alone. The positive side to using both, is that more was readily available to send into the government in return for legal tender. Baum was in favor of keeping silver alive in the economy, hence the SILVER slippers on the YELLOW brick road (yellow~gold).

There's also the fact that OZ is the abbreviation for ounce (what gold and silver are measured in)

There are numerous examples of symbolism relevant to the politicians of the day (the lion), the common man (the tin man), and other such things. But I don't remember most of them or feel like typing about them
