pralinkova-princezna — GIMP tutorial - as good as PS

Description My first proper tutorial! I so enjoyed making it. There are not many GIMP tutorials here, definitely not as many as for Photoshop, and this program is still underrated. I want to advertise it as a tool equal to Photoshop.

The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
inking
colouring
shading (with the use of Levels)
text adjustments

The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial. XD See it finished here: [link]

More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.

I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!

NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!

NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.

Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.

Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

Well I'm trying to color my Pick but when I go with a brush over the image and start coloring it only comes out different types of grey/black/white

How can I change that???

Change mode to RGB. Image > Mode > RGB

When I first got GIMP I had looked at no tutorials, and I saw other peoples pictures for GIMP. I tried to draw like I would do in every other program and I would fail horribly. So I gave up. After my SAI trial ended I decided to return to GIMP, I was still failing at it. But, when I saw this tutorial that you made, you filled me with new knowledge and confidence! Thank you!!

(starts crying happily.)

Okay, I MUST sound like an idiot, but I have NO CLUE how you even did the lines.
And you totally lost me with everything else.

I have a sketch ready, but I cannot figure out the lines.
Help me?

Scan your sketch and open it in GIMP. Click Image > Mode and make sure it's on RGB. Then in the Colors tab, choose Colors > Color to Alpha. The background should be gone, leaving only your lines. Make a new white layer under it so you can see what you're doing. Then create a transparent layer over everything, and using either the Paths Tool or the Paintbrush tool, you're going to basically trace your original lineart. You can then delete your original lineart or hide it. Color from there. Does that help?

I just downloaded GIMP yesterday and I know this already helped me a LOT! But I'm still confused on how to get the inked picture to have a white backround T~T Can you help me?

Layers > Transparency > Colour to Alpha, select white - it becomes transparent.

Don't worry about it. It took me a good long while to make the work there natural, or at least without problems.

I just don't want the background to be transparent if it's supposed to have a backround

Does GIMP accept tablets okay? I mean, does the pressure sensitivity work okay without need for thousands of configurations?

Probably your comp doesn't work well with that version. Try to get an older one. Or upgrade hardware... not sure.

I have had GIMP on my comp for quite awhile, but I was never brave enough or willing to find out some of the other tools apart from crop, paint, zoom, and the resizing tools!
This really helped! Thank you~
