pralinkova-princezna — GIMP tutorial - as good as PS

Description My first proper tutorial! I so enjoyed making it. There are not many GIMP tutorials here, definitely not as many as for Photoshop, and this program is still underrated. I want to advertise it as a tool equal to Photoshop.

The tutorial covers these areas of digital drawing:
inking
colouring
shading (with the use of Levels)
text adjustments

The Cisqua and the Mudkip pic was specially designed for this tutorial. XD See it finished here: [link]

More tips:
As for smudging, people complained soft shades are harder than cel shading. Use various sizes of fuzzy brushes and mainly remember to lower the opacity of them, that gives you better control over them.

I strongly recommend viewing other tutorials on anything you need - inking, colouring... everybody has a little different approach (though the basic ideas are the same) but you could pick up some useful tips and tricks and learn by seeing the art itself.
If you make something with the use of this tutorial, post a link, I would love to see it!

NOTE: My GIMP is in Czech, so the translations may not be 100% correct, but I hope everything will be clear from the pictures. Anyway, in case of more troubles, feel free to ask!

NOTE 2: This is an old version of GIMP, so the new one has slightly different icons and more functions, but the tools remain.

Gimp can be downloaded here: [link] It is for free.

Thanks for comments+faves, I'm incredibly happy you find it useful!

This Tutorial is very nice, and well thought out, very helpful. Just one question. How many layers are needed to get that quality? I mean you said each color will have it's own layer, but doesn't that mean that when you ink that each part of the inking needs a layer as well?

Layers are up to you, they help you have order in things. I like having everything separate because I change things all the time. Inking - lineart - has a layer too, above all colours.. or maybe I don't udnerstand your question.

Eh, I think I have it mostly figured out, though when you do color and do go out the lines, you have to erase the extras the normal way, or is there an easier method of doing it?

pralinkova-princezna In reply to Aerospine [2010-03-11 19:03:55 +0000 UTC]

I erase manually.. but if you can select e.g. the white background on another layer and use the selection in another, that would work, by simply pressing delete.

It is a matter of practice. Tablet is very good, mouse never gives such results unless you use the paths tool.

Holy crap.
I've been trying to figure out how to color in this program for months and I keep hitting dead-ends because I was so used to Photoshop until I got into Linux...
I applied a few of the tips on just a blob I drew and they worked! I can't wait to fully CG with this. I'm so crediting this when I get it right.

useful note [add this mebbe?]

.BMPs are fine but they use up ALOT of memory. .PNGs have teh same resolution but do less, so they're a better chose if you have limited computer memory available.

all I rly got from this tut, btw, was the soft shading thing XD the rest i already did, ecspeccially the SAVE OFTEN. lol. awesome job nonetheless 8D
