Actually, Freyr's a Vanir god, and part of the united tribe of Aesir/Vanir gods. He fell in love with Gerd from a distance, and sent his servant Skyrnir to propose in his place, giving him his magic sword, a basket of golden apples, and a self-duplicating ring. Gerd kept refusing, so Skyrnir eventually resorted to threats to get her to come with him back to Asgard.
It's a messy affair.
