I wonder if you'll continue using this cosplay and maybe create/purchase a Balloonicorn or make a Rainblower (that'd be cool - especially if you wore this to Manifest and had a Rainblower, you'd be my favourite cosplayer (sorry if you haven't watched Meet the Pyro yet...))

Some of the new items we could make. The Rainblower is the hardest due to the twists in it and the fluting at the ends. I'm not sure how to approach making that one! My aim is to get the standard Pyro loadout made first, so the shotgun and the axe still need to be made, and we're aiming for Armageddon in October. Manifest, if I understand correctly, is for anime, so I'd be kinda out-of-place there!

Although it is based around Japanese culture, people still do turn up as video game characters - I went last year and there was a BLU Pyro with a flamethrower, and lots of other TF2 cosplayers. But it's ok if you can't make it to Mani anyway.

I had to do a double-take. I litterally thought you had taken an HD image of the Pyro from TF2 and edited it into the image! GREAT JOB!!!

What da hell man, did you teleport Pyro in to IRL?
I like the use of the Doc Martens, very nice work. Shoot, dunno how you got the charring gradient right, but the whole costume is spot on!

Thank you!
Well, I have seen people use red overalls, but I made mine from scratch with red furniture vinyl because I wanted it to look as accurate as possible to the in-game model.

This looks amazing, I'm trying to make a Pyro cosplay myself but I'm having a hard time with the mask and the suit. Did you make everything by hand or did you buy stuff and modify it?

protowilson In reply to hellsing-roxx [2012-06-05 03:29:18 +0000 UTC]
The mask is a bought one, and was then modified. The side filter is part of a plastic container that had a screw top that I found in my cupboard, and the front filter piece is the bottom of a large plastic drink bottle. Lenses were tinted with car window tint. Everything else was handmade: the flame thrower, the fire cannisters, the suit etc. Oh, except for the boots: they're Doc Martens. Suit is made of red furniture vinyl.

Seeing as how no one has asked this yet. How did you make the handle of the flamethrower, I'm finding that to be the hardest part.

protowilson In reply to A-Mad-God [2012-04-16 06:27:58 +0000 UTC]
It's made with medium-density fibreboard.

Did you just HAVE to make the perfect Pyro cosplay?
Where did you get the mask? Or did you make it?

protowilson In reply to Eeveeninja77 [2012-04-16 05:15:30 +0000 UTC]
It's a Russian GP-5 gasmask with some additions bolted on to it, and the eye lenses tinted. You can usually find them on eBay.

Plain ol' attention to detail through research and accurate plans, as well as keeping a lot of the colour quite flat. Metal parts were given a slight sheen as well.
