Description Ohhhkay, I've been seeing some weird things in my paintchat room. Plus I haven't seen any big tutorials how to set up paintchat on the web...IN ENGLISH! (I've seen an Austrian one...somewhere). So I decided to do this tutorial.

A few notes:

- Please note that if you have trouble installing paintchat, PLEASE ASK YOUR WEBHOST and show them this tutorial. This tutorial is coming off from the notes I got from my server and I'm not pro enough to figure how to configure paint chat to a different webhost.

- You can also download the files by clicking 'download' at the side.

- If you know linux or unix, you pretty much have an advantage in using Putty.

- There's also a different way to load paintchat without a webhost by following the instructions from this link (Make sure you download paintchat from that link. They're different than the files I've provided) [link]

- Jtablet link: [link]

- Special thanks to Xepher.

- Paintchat is created by Shi-Chan.

I'm confused by only one thing. How is it that the URL is established? since its outside the root folder guests usually see, does it just become paintchat.website.com or paintchat/website.com? I did everything correctly, but when it came time to see if it really worked, I had no idea what to type in my browser.

Awesome tut. I ran into some issues but they were mostly user-account related. So after that I got it working all at once! Yay!

This is like the only tutorial I've ever commented on!

Saving instantly instead of caching would be nice too.

Hey, sorry I'm really confused at your installation process... To make sure, this tutorial IS how to get Paintchat up on your own website right?? Or is this just how to install it and run it for personal use? Will this actually post it on your website for others to use? if not, do you know any references that can help me do that?

I..would actually like to try to setup a paintchat site sometime in the future. My question is which webhost would you suggest me to use?

Oh wow I really wish I had found this post sooner LOL I was trying to do all this WITHOUT THIS INFO AND IT WAS A MESSS.

So I went through all of this alright, but I keep having a problem when I try to log into the chat. After I type in my handle it says "connection failure. retry?" after a pause.

Any ideas what's up? D: Thanks for the help!

OH also, when I type screen -r, I get this:

There are several suitable screens on:
4710.pts-0.box667 (Detached)
13306.pts-0.box667 (Detached)
Type "screen [-d] -r [pid.]tty.host" to resume one of them

And CTRL + C doesn't clear it. Could that be causing any of the issues?

I did everything several times already, and there's nothing wrong or different in the steps, but whenever I try to access the paintchat it says there's a connection failure.

Check with your webhost if they can run Java on their server.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mila-Valentine In reply to psychol-bob [2009-11-18 04:29:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes they do, I get the "Run Chatserver port = 18001" message on my SSH... but it keeps giving me a connection failure message (the SSH even says the pchat session is suspended because there's no one in)

My guess is that it's related to the ports I'm using, but I don't know which ports to use on my webhost.

Thank you anyways. I don't know of any other problems that could give me that error now...

psychol-bob In reply to Mila-Valentine [2009-11-19 02:31:17 +0000 UTC]

I guess you can try guessing a different port number, or put 000. I just put 18001 since that's mines.

Mila-Valentine In reply to psychol-bob [2009-11-21 16:38:51 +0000 UTC]

I think the problem may be with my host.

You have your hosted right? can you tell me which is the host provider you use?

I think I'll have to contract another one...

there should be a folder in root Paintchat...paintchat_server i think. something along those lines. delete the 'line' file.

Hey! I have a question for you. Our host allows us to run clientside java stuff but not server side java stuff. Would we need anykind of server side java stuff to run paintchat, or is it all client side?

psychol-bob In reply to LaudyLau [2009-08-28 21:52:10 +0000 UTC]

I think it should be Java on the server side according to this [link]

I really don't know how to do that . I've been trying to figure that out too for my room, but the only best way to control it so far is just shut down your paintchat room when you don't need it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mystic-spiritus In reply to psychol-bob [2009-08-26 14:34:11 +0000 UTC]

xP

Does the room list work for you on yours? Mine doesn't work, and its in a swf format just like the admin file. If you go to paintchat/pchat_admin.swf in your web browser it gives you admin control, but it doesn't show people on the room, or the pchat. You can't use the admin control on anyone but yourself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

psychol-bob In reply to mystic-spiritus [2009-08-27 04:44:32 +0000 UTC]

Are you talking about the list on the "lobby" page before you enter the room? For some reason, it'll work for IE, but not Firefox.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mystic-spiritus In reply to psychol-bob [2009-08-27 18:38:12 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Although it works on earlier version of paintchat for me that others own. My list doesn't work in IE either, though.

Network error, connection refused.
That's what I get with Putty

I checked and my host allows putty and ssh clients. I created a key, but I still can't make it work.

Not sure what I can be doing wrong. x___x

thanks for the tutorial though!

do ya have to turn pchat off when you're not using it?

what about those that you run into when you google "shi-chan paintchat" how come they dont turn it off? XD;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

psychol-bob In reply to Maracuyass [2009-03-17 04:18:12 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to . Just out of preference I would since I'm lazy to admin mines all the time (people are finding my room via Google) and I'd like to be easy with my bandwidth. If your room gets lots of activity, you do need to turn off/on room every once in a while so the chat logs don't lag your room during loading.

Is there a way to install pchat if you don't have access to the root? My host (paid, with SSH, etc) opens my master FTP automatically into public_html.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

psychol-bob In reply to kidavi [2009-03-17 04:56:36 +0000 UTC]

You need to have those files outside your public_html to run on a server.

Try downloading the winscp405 FTP program and see if it'll allow you access that root folder. The other alternative is using SSH to cd into your root folder, create a new directory and upload the files, but I don't know the right commands to do that.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to contact your webhost.

kidavi In reply to psychol-bob [2009-04-03 12:22:48 +0000 UTC]

So I get all the way to the end and execute the last command (screen java etc) and it says, "cannot access dev/pts/0: no such file or directory". :/

psychol-bob In reply to kidavi [2009-04-03 17:25:58 +0000 UTC]

were you able to put those files into your root/home folder?

kidavi In reply to psychol-bob [2009-04-04 01:15:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep. But it turns out that I can't finish the process anyway, my host only supports server-side Java on dedicated servers, not shared hosting. Oh well. I've been waiting on Xepher to get back to me on my application for a while now.

I've got the paintchat running just fine, but my new values for the canvas width and height aren't being implemented (it's running it at 900 x 1200 and ignoring the defined values).

Have you seen this problem before / know of a solution? I've tried backing out, shutting everything down, firing putty back up, editing the config file, and restarting the pchat, but nothing seems to affect the canvas size. :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

psychol-bob In reply to kidavi [2009-06-11 03:15:25 +0000 UTC]

1) did you download the paint chat off from here (sidebar)
2) Try opening your CF file instead under dream weaver, edit there, and upload it instead. maybe that would work.
3) Is the canvas over 900x1200? I think* that's the limit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kidavi In reply to psychol-bob [2009-06-11 19:44:01 +0000 UTC]

1) Yes
2) Yep, tried that
3) That would be the problem then. It's over 900 x 1200... is that limit imposed by Xepher though? Because I've been on plenty of ShiChan v3.66 pchats that have canvases over twice that size.
