The mascot costume that CHEVRON inhabits is based off of Button, a character from the obscure animated children’s show Scruffy Pup’s Farmyard Adventures. This is what that character looked like in the original cartoon.

Scruffy Pup was a show mostly aimed at toddlers, with simple lessons on friendship and manners. Scruffy, the protagonist, was a little dog on a farm who lived with all his animal friends. Button, so named because she was “cute as a button”, was Scruffy’s love interest and was known around the farm for being sweet.
CHEVRON, who’s name when alive was Cherry, watched the show a lot when she was a little girl.
Years later, a teenaged Cherry began work at an amusement park at which there were (bootleg) mascot costumes of Button and Scruffy. Charmed by the costumes from the show she had loved so long ago, she was convinced to work as the mascot of the park.
There was someone else working there, too, though: a man about ten years older than Cherry who played the part of Scruffy. As the two characters were romantically involved in the show, this man would be uncomfortably touchy around Cherry, and claim it was simply to be “in character”. Cherry saw right through that.
It made her furious. During one of their breaks, behind closed doors, Cherry took a brick to his head.
It was her first murder, but far from the last. Finding catharsis in extreme violence, Cherry stole the costume, and so began her feverish killing spree. She used the character of Button as a kind of twisted persona, killing in the costume and leaving vulgar graffiti of the character at crime scenes. She was making a statement: innocence will always be poisoned. Gentleness and kindness cannot truly exist.
Cheryl “Cherry” Vernon was known as The Button Killer at the height of her infamy, and struck fear into the hearts of many. She remains a urban legend: somewhere, The Button Killer roams with a hammer, wearing a rotten old costume…
