GHOSTS IN BLACKBIRCH

Life and death in Blackbirch is a strange thing, and there's an extensive grey area between the two. The ticket to a peaceful afterlife, the true end of existence and consciousness, is to accept your death, and if you can't- unbeknownst to the living- you're likely to stick around long past your expiration date. There's several classification levels of ghosts in Blackbirch, some more powerful than others. The less willing you are to accept your death, the harder your spirit will cling to life without a physical form, and the more powerful your ghost will be.

Ghosts, however, aren't a person's entire being. Ghosts are like memories given form; they're messy, vague, and emotional, never fully there. Death fragments a person, and only the strongest emotions continue to cling to the confused spirit. Most ghosts come from deaths that are unexpected, or full of fear and injustice, like murders, suicides, car crashes, natural disasters, house fires, etc.

CHEVRON

When the infamous Button Killer, Cherry Vernon, took her own life in the mascot costume, she meant it only as a final statement of sorts. This was the mask she'd wore throughout her short-lived but bloody career, earning her nickname in the media, and it felt right that if her final victim were to be herself, she might as well dress for the occasion. She died angry, scared, and alone, in a hell of her own creation.

The perfect formula for creating an incredibly powerful Poltergeist. Poltergeists are ghosts that can interact physically with the living world, and are generally the most dangerous, often coming from violent, malicious, or vengeful spirits.

Cherry's soul, however, went beyond what is standard for a Poltergeist. Though her corpse was removed from the costume, her angry spirit stayed trapped inside. The costume was so significant to Cherry's life and death that her very soul became intertwined with it, weaving itself into the fibers of the cloth and forming a new skin, filling the costume with a desperate imitation of human life inside of it, huge, glistening eyeballs appearing in the mask's eye sockets. Within the costume is a pale imitation of human anatomy, bones twisted and distorted to fit the costume's inhuman proportions and bulked up with warm, pulsing muscle and viscera. If you were to unzip the zipper, hot, bloody organs would spill out of the front, squirming and apparently alive.

Cherry's soul created a monster that is dangerous, unique, and cannot be classified. Meant to be a Poltergeist, similar to a Haunted Object, always visible to the living, and filled with strange matter indistinguishable from real human viscera, CHEVRON is a violent, bloody enigma. CHEVRON's existence is miserable and torturous, eternally locked in a hot, claustrophobic costume, unable to escape- for there's nothing underneath it that can escape. The mascot costume is her body now.

CHEVRON is what came of Cherry's soul combined with the costume, a symbol of Cherry's drive to murder, and as such became a manifestation of violence and anger. Confused, afraid, and angry, unaware of who she was or why she couldn't escape the costume, she became driven to do the only thing she knew, and took up her hammer.

For years, CHEVRON roamed the woods of Blackbirch and the surrounding areas, brutally shattering the skull of any unfortunate person who crossed her path and the source of countless missing persons cases. She became an urban legend to tell at campfire stories, or a warning to those who were thinking of hiking alone. Her reign of terror continues, though many doubt if she actually exists.

Blackbirch does not remember Cheryl Vernon fondly. A small town now with their only reputation being the Button Killer's hometown, and still feeling the sting of the loss of several beloved residents, dead by her hand, the community despises the "horror movie" atmosphere their home is regarded with. Cherry was given a small, unceremonious grave, which saw much wear and tear at the hands of bitter vandals (particularly the friends of Gabriel Sharpe, her sixth victim).

CHEVRON, who by then so far had considered her name Cherry, began to find that after wandering the woods for months her memories of her life were slipping. Personal details began to get fuzzy, and she realized that as hard as she tried, she could no longer remember her name. Startled, she returned to Blackbirch in search of her grave, hoping to refresh her memory, but by the time she found her grave, it had already been long since vandalized. Many of the letters were no longer visible for all the cracks, and instead of reading CHERYL J. VERNON, her grave now read:

CHE███ █. V█R█ON

Angry at the destruction of her grave, but unable to find any more information about who she was, she took the name CHEVRON and continued on her lonely, wandering journey, now only a fraction of who she was in mind and in name.

EPILOGUE

CHEVRON's story is still continuing and is involved heavily with apotheoseity 's Roleplay Discord server, Prose!

After thirty years of wandering and murder, CHEVRON finds a phone in the pocket of one of her victims containing an app for an interdimensional chatroom and communicates with others for the first time in decades. Her story becomes intertwined with several others, including apotheoseity 's Frog, a young serial killer who can communicate with ghosts, @/justabunchofpineapples on Tumblr's Lydia, a ghost who manipulates plants to have a physical form, and many others.
