Description New species I'm making

Apparently my scanner is going blind.

They are not headless. I'll have a better sketch later to show what their head looks like from different angles.

Info so far:
-They are about the size of a border collie.
-They are insectivores and use their large mouth, long sticky tongue and speed to catch flying insects.
-They are pack animals but are very shy of humans
-Their "head" is not as heavy as it looks. Most of it is taken up by a crop, like a pelican.
-Their lid-like upper jaw can be tucked inside the mouth or rested on top like a normal jaw.
-The mouth can be used as a sucker for eating plants and algae (not preferred food, but available)
-Their eyes protrude slightly and can rotate independently of one another.
-They have three toes on each foot
-They are quite agile and will often climb trees, but never to a great height. Their lack of tail makes them easy to tip off a perch.
-They are usually gray or tan, but have chromatophores in their skin that allow them to change between two or three distinct patterns. Each Ket has a unique pattern set, but colors often run in a family line.

Those are a pair of nostrils and the rest are pits (heat sense, like a python or a viper)

Hmm, are the "insects" they eat endothermic?

It's not really something I put much thought into. Just a silly critter design because I get bored sometimes

Would make perfect sense if the insects are endothermic - a lot of the really big, meaty Earth insects are endothermic, after all.

Or alternatively, the heat pits could be evolutionary leftovers from an ancestor that ate endotherms or, I dunno, fruit that release heat or something. Or maybe they're used for... navigation somehow? Communication?

Does their environment have big aggregations of large "insects?"

Just thinking of bogong moths - their hibernation aggregations are so big that they used to attract mass gatherings of /humans/ (apparently the trick to cooking them is to singe off the fur).

That's the idea! These guys are essentially dog-sized frogs, and they eat large arthropods

Infidel1990 [2013-09-16 11:06:42 +0000 UTC]

This is cool! Its like a cross between a dog and a chameleon. Judging by this drawing they look like pretty muscular creatures. Its crazy that they can stay in such great physical shape on a diet of insects. They must have a really slow metabolism. The drawing is amazing by the way

How so? He has very nice artwork, to be sure, but I can't see a lot of similarity...

Its not much of similarity.Just the designs.
The ones I'm referring is the Expedition Darwin series, with all the weird looking alien creatures.

coragus [2010-11-26 06:38:52 +0000 UTC]

why would they be pack animals if the eat insects?? dont you mean herd??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to coragus [2010-11-26 15:45:57 +0000 UTC]

Well yes, but I think "herd" refers more to migration and hierarchy. Herd animals migrate regularly and tend to have either one leader or no hierarchy at all. Pack animals do not migrate regularly and have a complex social structure, with a matriarch and patriarch, then members with a descending level of clout within the pack.

Plus, an insectivore is considered a class of carnivore.

coragus In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-27 02:26:03 +0000 UTC]

yeah but packs are formed to work together to bring down large prey... how big are the isects on this planet??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to coragus [2010-11-27 02:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Mm, you have a point. Apart from that, it is a pack. I would have said troupe, but they don't do the whole collective foraging and sharing of food thing. Pack is the closest to what I'm going for.

None of Earth's animals can really be compared...

The insects are pretty much like ours.

coragus In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-27 02:38:31 +0000 UTC]

should call it a new thing, like a squaggle of Ket

Pythosart In reply to coragus [2010-11-27 02:45:39 +0000 UTC]

I probably should...

Though there's no need to confuse people. I think I'll stick with pack for now.

Pythosart In reply to coragus [2010-11-27 03:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Weeeelllllllllll I think not for that one. Ax Cats and Sand Drakes are already in clans with humans or just solitary, so...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

coragus In reply to Pythosart [2010-11-27 04:34:37 +0000 UTC]

dang it but they have to have some sort of of sorting to do, inder classification of humans would it be a new class, like animal kingdom and then extra terrestrial or what XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to coragus [2010-11-27 17:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, the thing about Toria is that a lot of the animals were imported from Earth. Some of the extraterrestrial animals were studies in evolution and genetics conducted on other planets and then imported to Toria.

Read the little synopsis thing. That has most of the stuff you need to know.
