The last tutorial I made was years ago. I'm no good at teaching but hopefully this answers most questions about my process.

I've always wondered how you colour things, now I figured you do almost the same as me.. but with more concentration, this was extremely helpful for me thank you for the tutorial.

Jesus, how do you not smudge any of the pencil lines when drawing? D:>

quartervirus-archive In reply to Redemption909 [2013-03-02 03:29:31 +0000 UTC]

A lot of practice. I used to smudge a lot too, now I'm much more regimented when it comes to drawing, usually outlining everything left-to-right (right handed) to avoid the number of times I rub over a certain spot. If that's not working, you could try putting a piece of (BLANK!!!!) paper underneath your palm so that you move your hand less on the paper, or try a smudgeguard at www.smudgeguard.com The problem with smudgeguards is that I burn through them at a rate of one every two-three months because of how much I draw.

I've found that blue pencil smudges much less than graphite, so it's a definite plus to planning the drawing in blue first before outlining. It keeps things much cleaner.

I used to have a blue graphite pencil...I lost it. 8D

Thank for the advice, though! I've always worried that using paper would smudge it worse, so I think I'll try to find a smudgeguard.

Even though I use more or less the same method, seeing it all put down into a tutorial like that makes me go "eerk, daunting.". Still, fabulous job and I imagine this took some patience (and lots of screenshots) to pull together.

Given the Brilliance and detail of the picture, I think your talent is wasted on animation with its need to simplify for the sake of frame output.

Damn lovely work!

Heheh, I can never sacrifice enough detail and torture myself with heavy line mileage instead. But I do hope to make a graphic novel with these characters.

I have a PS program from like 1995... Dear God what I could do with a newer version! Actually no. The shiny buttons and multiple features would probably make my brain implode. Doesn't mean I can't Lurvs your tutorial. I can just imagine the hours this single piece took to finish.

quartervirus-archive In reply to Ekorra [2013-03-02 03:26:27 +0000 UTC]

My version of PS is actually five years old, I think. It's CS4, the school computers are up to CS6 and the new layout just drives me nuts. I don't like it.

Ekorra In reply to quartervirus-archive [2013-03-02 04:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know your pain. I actually did try a newer version of PS back in '08 because I got a new computer(yea, a 13 year upgrade!). I was so lost I took the time to dig through my storage unit to find my old ass printer driver CD that had my current version on it. Took me hours and one heck of a dust allergy fit but I was back in my comfy blanket of ancient PS.

Amazing !
May I ask you how many time you need to complete all this process for a so huge and detailled picture ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

quartervirus-archive In reply to gdpr-13956628 [2013-03-02 03:25:38 +0000 UTC]

This one was drawn on A3 paper, and took about a day for outlining, then three or four days for the colors. Louis's coloring took a day (that kimono was a nightmare), James another day, Santiago another, and the background and final touches (textures) on the last day.

Hah I really should get some blue pencils. Although I've been too lazy to scan my stuff lately... and usually ink everything digitally. But yeah.

Btw, I like Louis's kimono.

quartervirus-archive In reply to Saria29 [2013-03-02 03:24:36 +0000 UTC]

I've seen the same effect achieved with orange or red pencils, using the Ctrl+U window and just removing the red/magenta colors instead. But it doesn't work as well as blue because the colors are more easily picked up by the scanner, in my experience.

I can see that set transparency setting to be very useful in future, thanks.

I really should start using thumbnails more. Will help me a lot more with thinking up poses, which I suck at. -_-

FirstCaptainRickkard In reply to ??? [2013-03-01 17:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so you don't go back and lineart everything digitally? Since I kind of just color my pencil sketches, this is actually helpful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

quartervirus-archive In reply to FirstCaptainRickkard [2013-03-06 08:20:19 +0000 UTC]

I rarely have digital lineart.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FirstCaptainRickkard In reply to quartervirus-archive [2013-03-07 02:40:15 +0000 UTC]

I see. I actually found that doing lineart digitally actually slows me down way too much to finish anything so I haven't done digital lineart for quite a while, myself.
