Description
This doesn't feel finished yet, but I'm not sure what else I should do with it... I may edit it more later if I figure it out. The grass is especially bothering me but I really don't know how to fix it. I'd also like to add more details since the setting still seems a bit plain, but I dunno if that'd be overkill. Edit: I've tweaked a lot of stuff - Ditto's lighting and head bumps, water texture, grass shading, and rock colors.Anyway, Ditto has been my favorite PokΓ©mon ever since I first played Blue. It's just so damn cute and squishy and unique! Most attempts at making it realistic seem to base it off an amoeba - that really doesn't make sense to me, besides being impractical, its dex entries specifically state that it's multicellular.
I imagine instead that it'd be more like a mollusk, sort of a cross between a gastropod and a cephalopod. It can change its color, texture, shape, and size at will - like an octopus, but more advanced. They're terrestrial but often found near water like most slugs and snails, though I imagine that they're not slimy (just squishy and rather smooth.)
Also, like many gastropods, Ditto is obviously a hermaphrodite species. The idea of PokΓ©mon genetics breaks my brain though so I won't speculate on their ability to hybridize with everything under the sun.

This has to be the cutest and best drawn ditto I've seen! So cute, and it really feels like you're watching it in it's natural habitat ^_^

Would a ditto dissolve if it fell in the water?
...Anyway, I like it. All the little details and stuff. It does in fact look like it belongs on a TC.
The top curve is a bit exaggerated, but it's alright. It fits in nicely.

You'd recieve full credit. It's no problem if I can't, but I'd just love to showcase this amazing image .

Yeah, the gender thing has always confused me. Put a Ditto in with a male pokemon, and it presumably turns into that pokemon and then they mate. Uhm, except that logic would suggest that the Ditto transforms into a male. >.>' So strange.

It might work like.. PokΓ©mon are nearly all genetically compatible with each other and only separated into Egg groups by physical/anatomical differences, so Ditto (who already has both sets of erm, equipment) just changes its shape to facilitate breeding. Or something like that.
I dunno... I hardly ever use Dittos for breeding anyway, I know I'm in the minority in raising them for actual battling though .________.

tubanome In reply to RacieB [2010-05-21 00:44:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I guess it just knows how to transform into the opposite gendered pokemon. It sees a female and goes, "A'ight, I know what you like. " and then sprouts the erm... necessities. >.>'
And I've never been much of a fan of battling with Ditto. I'm a type-advantage abuser, and it's not often that a pokemon's own abilities are going to be super-effective against it. And if they are, since Ditto has to spend his first turn on Transform, no matter how high his speed is, the opponent is going to have the opportunity to make the first offensive strike, so you're doomed.
Good on you for taking the road less travelled, though. Robert Frost would be so proud.

Very lovely work! It would be funny if it were looking into the water at a fish Pokemon and was beginning to transform into it. Just an idea spawned by seeing this.
Not sure what else you could add, since you feel it isn't finished. We hope you can figure out what you're missing. It looks great, nonetheless.

I was thinking about making some water- and/or flying-types visible somewhere but I ended up deciding that it should be the only PokΓ©mon visible. I'm still pondering sticking a few "normal" bugs in, like a ladybug or spider or something... dunno.

It makes me glad that I got Emerald instead of Ruby/Sapphire, since Ditto can only be found in Hoenn in Emerald... Still glad I got Emerald for other reasons too, damn berry glitch.

About the grass:
This is just a shot in the blue, but maybe if you add more shorter grass in the front. I see many long and many very short, but up to no medium.
Also: add some brown grass to the grasses in front, also in different heights.

RacieB In reply to cheetahtrout [2010-05-19 16:59:26 +0000 UTC]
Hmm yeah, I'm pretty bad at visualizing backgrounds so when I doodled out the original idea, it was just sort of Ditto with a grassplosion behind him [link] and I realized that looked a bit weird while I was actually drawing them out... I was just getting super frustrated on it and really didn't know how to make it look more natural ._.

cheetahtrout In reply to RacieB [2010-05-19 17:26:07 +0000 UTC]
Don't let it drag you down. I usually don'T come up with any background at all. but I also see that in the sketch the grass had many more different angles maybe thats another reason.

RacieB In reply to cheetahtrout [2010-05-19 20:40:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, in the sketch it was like, "okay I need big grass here! -scribbles everywhere-" then I go to draw it in and start from the edges only to realize as I get toward the middle that it doesn't look quite how I intended, but I dunno how to fix it without it looking strange (why is there super tall grass right here and not at the edge of the water, etc) x_o

Aww cute :3 yeah I love thinking about Pokemon realistically, but at the same time I don't. I like the grass here and all the little details around the rocks. I suck at backgrounds Blah. But I should try them more often.
You know I watched that Pokemon Prof. group because I was excited to see the art in it, but you're one of the very few people who submits to it that I am actually happy to see art from XD

I hate drawing backgrounds so, so much. Mainly I have a problem visualizing them in the first place, I can see exactly how I want a subject to look anatomically etc (whether I can render it successfully is something else, but at least I know how it's meant to look) but with backgrounds I just kind of get.. color blobs. Then when I actually try to draw one, it's not just ground I'm drawing it's A MILLION INDIVIDUAL ROCKS ARRRGHHH etc and then I punch something u______u

LOL I know right? I also hate doing clothes. Clothes are annoying. I should draw Pokemon more often because they don't have to wear clothes XD

RacieB In reply to GalenaLarkin [2010-05-19 20:52:46 +0000 UTC]
I actually kinda like drawing clothes, but I barely ever get a chance to since I mainly draw animals =<
I'm also awful at designing clothes, it's really frustrating trying to think of what to put on a character when I know the general style I want for them but not the individual items (a specific example I'm struggling with a lot lately is this species [link] physical appearance and accessories are really important to them and they must be Fancy at all times, but I don't know how to translate that into actual designs x_x)

I think the problem with the grass is that it's un-shaded, so it looks a little flat (though the layering helps give it some volume). Of course, with time it would take even to use the burn brush on all those blades, it probably wouldn't be worth fixing at this point.
This looks kind of like an illustration for the PokΓ©mon TCG, to be honest... maybe it's the way the arms stand out that makes me think that.

RacieB In reply to SougonNaTakumi [2010-05-19 16:55:04 +0000 UTC]
I'm crazy though and keep every color and shading layer separate, so I've got seven grass layers there I can work with individually =x It probably wouldn't be too much trouble to shade the visible ones if i could figure out how they oughta look in that lighting...

Aww this is cute! I think its a fine picture like that, dont worry so much lol. The grass look really nice in my opinion. The pokeball is pretty, too
The only thing i'd say is... maybe smoothen out a little bit the "crack" on top of ditto's head....? it ...looks like a butt.... but otherwise he's really cute lol
awww the little rocks and the floating "grass" are so cute too (yes im weird)

RacieB In reply to pyroasta [2010-05-19 16:51:57 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, it's meant to be sort of gumdrop-shaped but I was having a lot of trouble figuring out the shading for it. I think that the main problem is the lighting, I'm not good at rendering shiny stuff in general and tried looking at a bunch of snail pictures to get an idea of how reflective they are but they mostly just look wet.
