Description
This is a blonde or yellow Labrador Retriever, and at 5" by 7", it's quite small. It was part of a series of commissions that were requested for a single mat. Painting the dogs was a lot easier than cutting several holes in a pair of mats so that they'd fit together properly.Despite their increasing popularity, I'm rarely asked to paint Labs. My most common requests are chihuahuas, black poodles and golden retrievers. I wonder why that is.

Our Labrador looked like this. I still remember this look of her. Very nice work!

Thank you very much! I've painted a whole bunch of blonde labs - they're terrifically popular around here. Really easy to paint, too.

This reminds me of a lab I had as a kid. Her name was Pumpkin and she unfortunately died when I was about 7, but I remember going to my grandmother's for Christmas and after presents were opened, I'd curl up in the floor and lay my head on her chest and we'd sleep for hours.
Great work. ^^

Well, most of my pet-art clients are older women who aren't familiar with digital photography, so most of the photos I get are just little snaps taken out in the yard or in the kitchen. They always apologize for "redeye" (from the flash), but I've noticed that it actually helps me know exactly where to place the pupil!

now when you say older women do you mean women your age or are they older than you?

Thank you very much! The bright light made this one awfully simple to paint - it took very little time. I kept thinking I must have missed something...

It's funny because as I continue to paint, I get better and faster at it. I guess once you paint something a few hundred times, you start to get the hang of it!

Thank you very much, Jon! I got really lucky on the reference photo for this one. I had to talk the lady into letting me just paint the head and shoulders - she wanted the whole body! I think it's probably better this way. Thanks for the , too!

This is, in one word, awesome. The background is perfect for that dog, the colours get together extremely well. The shading and colouring on the dog is extremely well done, as usual. Love his/her expression, looks like a proud dog Must've been a pure joy to paint this piece.
