Description
Lydia Hodgson, the sister of the controller of the Obbeeys Railway at the time, visited the newly formed LMS in 1922. On her visit, she encountered the Lickey banker. When she visited Darby Works later in her visit, she asked to see the design papers of the 0-10-0 and was inspired. She thought that the design would work well on the incline leading into the Canyon branchline. When she got back to the island of Obbeeys, she drew up the design of a 2-10-0 inspired by the banker. The ponytruck was added to help keep the engines on the track on the inclines, where coming of the rails would result in almost guaranteed disaster. The first member of the new bankers, nicknamed by the branchline's passengers as 'Hodgsons', was built in 1924. Another batch of three was built in 1931. The 'Hodgsons' are successful banking engines that still work on the Canyon branch these days.
