Description
In honour of its 10th anniversary, I set about creating these laser-etched 3D crystal keyrings of the main dagger from Riven: The Sequel to Myst . This took more effort than you would think. I didn't want to just recreate the object myself and risk having any of the proportions incorrect, so I extracted the model directly from Myst V: End of Ages . However, the files encrypted (but that's already been broken by someone else), the file format had not yet been completely documented by other fans/hackers and so not only were there no programs to convert the data, but the documentation isn't even complete as to what each part of the file does so it required some trial-and-error. I spent around three weeks writing an extraction program, then spent the next two weeks cleaning up the model and preparing it for use in the crystal - welding all vertices, repositioning some edges to show up better, recreating the dagger's tip from scratch, etc... Next up, instead of just doing a grid-based point export, I set about writing a point dithering program to provide better-than-normal resolution as well as rough colourising on the handle. This isn't something that 3D laser etching companies usually do, but I found a company that was willing to do it for me. After sending the 3D model and a rather lot of money their way, a few weeks later a box arrived at my doorstep, filled with a few dozen of these very high quality 3D laser-etched crystal keyrings of a Riven Moiety Dagger. I estimate that all-up I spent around 110 hours on these, spread over 3 months.Be sure to check out some more photos of these same keyrings here , here and here .

Darn you for being in Australia! I'd absolutely bid if you weren't. *sigh*
Those are amazing... I can never get over how talented you are.

It's only $10.30 AU for regular airmail shipping to the US..? I didn't think that was too expensive, but maybe I'm weird because I'm used to having to pay $40 or so in shipping every time I order something off amazon.com or thinkgeek.
And I'm not talented. Really, I'm not. I just put a lot of time into things so it looks like I'm talented, and you have no idea at how many times I had to do something again and again to get right.

Alright, skilled then.
Yeah, I have a tendency to spend excessive amounts of money on things I really don't need... I'm trying to wean myself off it.

Not skilled either. I just spend a lot of time on things, and make so many errors that you wouldn't believe how many times I use the undo button Seriously, anyone could get the same results with no practice, skill or talent if they just put the same amount of time in that I often do... I put too much time into my things o.o

They were made specifically for a few friends and for me to give to certain people as presents. They went quickly. I have a box next to me of 25 (yes, I had to, the magic number ), and nearly every one has a name on it.

Oh! Legendary!
That looks awesome, I am sorry I can't crit anymore than that, I'll have to settle for being a fanboy
Is selling them legal? I wouldn't know, but its great you are donating profits to MYSTerium - good on you!

From what I can tell in regards to the legalities of fanart, so long as I'm not mass-producing/making them in large numbers, it's counted as a derivative work and is fine. Which is one of the reasons why I'm not planning on ever doing another etching run, ever. That and it keeps them as being very special things, as they are very special to me.

Have you got any of these wonderful keyrings left?

Unfortunately not; I auctioned off the last two in 2009. The only ones I still have are my personal ones & it'd take a lot of money to convince me to part with them.

Too bad, but ah, I don't want you to feel forced to part from your last pieces... We can wait for the Myst III Exile 10 years celebration
Won't miss that one.

Yeah - I will be watching the ebay auctions very closely XD
If you can make a few, and it counts as derivative work, could you make a few full size posters of the Riven photomosaics and put them on ebay? Or is that impossible?

riumplus In reply to Raithien [2008-06-07 11:33:35 +0000 UTC]
That's a bit of a different thing, as there's no way to easily extract out the 3D vertex data from these crystals, but just by looking at those posters you're viewing a quarter of the game's content and anyone could very easily scan it and get copies of the images.
