Description In Hagerstown, Maryland, I caught sight of two diesel engines backing down onto a freight train in the yard. The near engine is 2311, a road slug. Slugs are locomotives without a prime mover, so they only contain traction motors and ballast. The slug can be distinguished by its lack of radiators. The slug gives extra torque at low speeds, perfect for shunting. Road slugs contain a cab and fuel tank to supplement regular engines. The far engine is EMD GP40-2 No. 6907, originally built for the Chesapeake and Ohio. I didn't get to actually see them pull the train, as we wanted to go downtown that day.

Nice catch! I got 2386 yesterday on J929. They look pretty sharp actually!

Looks like the slug was a GP-35!

You live near Hagerstown? I'm up in Mercersburg, PA (half an hour away if you don't know.)

I'm actually from Fairfax, Virginia. We just went up to Hagerstown for a vacation. I do know where Mercersburg is, as I went to Whitetail on that vacation to learn skiing.
