Yeah, the paper you linked didn't even contain the methodology by which they reached those weights, just the citation for them.
The weights come from Anyonge 1993, whose mass estimates and methodology are notorious for being gross overestimates - they combined together the equations for ursids, canids and felids in order to find the body mass of the American lion - it is a gross exaggeration. I'm doubtful even the largest American lions could reach 400kg, much less 523kg, or any cat that has ever existed for that matter - even the very largest populator would only have been around 450kg.
