Tendrils of smoke are so mesmerizing as they waft up through a sunbeam...or how dust motes seem to dance in the beam in a darkened room. I sometimes wonder now why I never thought of photographing them.

Well ...
The thing with smoke is that there isn't any one shot that you're particularly gunning for, really. It's just click, click, click ... click, click ... click some more ... and then look through 200+ photos to see if you actually got anything good. Most of the smoke photos I've submitted have been pleasant surprises.
I sit with my notebook as I open 10 or so images at a time, and as they open and I like them I'll make a note of which ones I want to look at closer. Sometimes, looking back through my notebooks I'll find comments like 'Holy shit!' next to some. Heh.
