Description
Full title: CAPITULATION TO THE INEVITABILITY OF HUMAN RE-DESIGN18" x 18". Acrylic on canvas ~ 9/2010
This is my submission for the "THINGS TO COME" exhibition in New York City, opening 9/9/2010 at the BOLD HYPE gallery, ([link] )
The title pretty much expresses my idea; I believe that in the not too distant future we will accelerate the augmentation of our bodies using technology to an unprecedented degree. What began with wooden legs, hearing aids and eye glasses will become biomechanical “super-limbs”, super-vison eye implants and computer brain inseminations. I foresee surgically implanted communication devises, (Hey! I’d get one, wouldn’t you?) and … Well, only your imagination is the limit, and we all know there is no limit to the human imagination. I am one who believes that if we don’t kill ourselves in the next few decades, we will begin to push beyond Darwinian evolution. We will begin to “self-evolve” and “self-invent”. I foresee the next revolution of mankind being that of reinventing ourselves in the literal sense. We will become something all together new! I may be to old to see the day that death is “cured”, but some of you reading this now might actually live to see this.
My “self-evolved” character in this painting has reinvented himself to a point that he’s barely recognizable as a human. He is a “Post-Human”.
Eventually all human beings will need to capitulate to the inevitability of our self re-design or parish. Evolution is evolution after all.
This is a 're-painting' of a smaller piece I did in 2008, "SUPPLICANT" ([link] ) This preceeding painting can also be seen here in my DA gallery.

You are putting the perfect visuals to a story I started to write a number of years ago. 1984 meets Brave New World sort of story. It's a deeply serious matter, you've captured the essence perfectly. The destruction in the background completes the idea, for me. In the end, this type of evolution can't be good for the Earth. Bravo!

This is one approach to cosmology of 'humanity'. Mine is more along the lines of evolution of pluripotent consciousness, where what may be thought 'individual consciousness' comes to be but one of the many senses of metamorphosing higher beings, singular consciousness of a plurality of living and say cybernetic or integrated forms, beings or devices ascending not so much by change of individual forms, but through enhanced synergy of systemic environments of purposeful unity and coherence. The 'little guy' peering through his optics from one of your painting's skulls will be able to observe 'simultaneously' and mutually adaptively through numerous sense-portals of 'his' nigh god-like environment's individuals (human and otherwise). Yes, people may well change too, but evolution of systems, not merely isolated individuals, is in store. Kind Regards.

Great technique and imagination. I like your use of color, too. The image reminds me of the song, "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson.

I envy how well you can translate your thoughts into paintings. And some of your works are really like a summary of what I'm looking for in art!
I'm interested in post-human evolution as well. Would like to recommend "The singularity is near" by Ray Kurzweil. That book definitively expanded my mind.

Cloud cover of gabble
Too much heat
Not enough light
for intelligent life
to thrive
Sing another chorus?
Clear the cover before us
with voices like sirens
reversed
Uncover, dispell the curse
if you will
or be part of the kill
Here, in this still place,
prior to awakening,
which dream takes hold?
Dream whatever dream you see.
Reveal your potent imagery.
Rlease your awesome wings
-- it's okay; it's just a dream ...

You're a very skilled artist my friend, and your theory is very interesting. I agree it'll most likely happen. But I disagree that it's something that should happen - personally, I see the "manmade" or "self-made" augmentation of a species to be a slow spiral down toward annihilation and destruction. While I believe it should be applied to lesser effect to give back what life may have taken from people - hearing, sight, limbs etc., I think anything more is an obsessive coveting - the greed of wanting "more" sight or "more" feeling. But to create "more" would destroy the base - for all our excellent sciences and intelligent observations, there's a lot we still don't know, and a lot of what we know is most likely flawed. It's naiive to think we can force an evolution by our own hand, and expect it to be successful - even 1 million years from now. I wouldn't call it post-human, I'd call it simply unhuman.
I believe it'll happen, but it's followers will most likely die out, and they'll be considered the "neanderthal" of some even stranger age of a species. I'm talking long after you and I are already gone, of course.
Who knows what the correct path is. Maybe it is in indeed a species' fate to evolve to the stage where it moulds it's own progression. All I know is, I value my Humanity, good sir. I wouldn't sell it for the possibility to fly or have eyes in the back of my head. I'd use tools for those things, and keep myself intact. But like I said, moot point - I'll be dead and rotting by then

I believe, we don´t really need the machine aid. WE have much more capacities ansd abilities in our genetic store, just not activated.
What you describe is going on, I agree with that. It is called the principle of Ariman, who wants to turn the world into a perfect machine. For me kinda scary, although I´m a fan of yours as well as of Giger.
But wouldn´t it be better to develope your telepathical senses, beaming yourself out of your mind´s forces....without any implants or machines bothering you??? I still hope we can escape the control of the allmighty and merciless control by THE MACHINE. May also be a matter of "not taking the wrong stuff" - but, do we even have a choice?
If I find out how to do that (in a controlled way), I´ll give you a note!
Anyway, your art is mindblowing!

Hell. This is hell. The destruction of the natural body, with the mind trapped inside an undying, rotten shell for the rest of eternity. Unable to die. Unable to let things end, until everything else is destroyed, leaving the pitiable immortals trapped in the void.
For the good of everything on this planet, this must not come to pass.

Love how the not so "self evolved" human is praying to the "post human" - really nice subtle combination of religion or worship with science - almost like worshipping technology and the future.
Amazing as always!

Damn it, I don't want to live in your world of tomorrow. But perhaps there will be robot whores to fuck, and we can have our very own personal beer brewery installed close by our stomach. Hold on, I'm getting a beep on my blue tooth.
I really enjoy the overlapping geometric planes you have established over the cyber god character. Gives it a metaphysical feel to the painting.
