Description
Acrylic on canvas - 24" X 24" May, 2009"UNDERWORLD I" is the first in what I hope will become a series of "UNDERWORLD" paintings. When I use the word "underworld" I am referring to many tiny worlds that exist all around us, and even upon and within us. I am interested in the flora and fauna that live in these tiny worlds "under" our normal field of vision. The things that one must hunt for in the grass, in the pools of water, or even with a microscope. The small worlds of life that exist in abundance, but which we ignore in our ever more self consumed "life styles".
This subject for my work is the obvious evolution of my prior works, such as "CRUSTACEAPODS"( [link] ) and my "MICROBIA" paintings. This one is subtitled "INSECTUS"

Yes ... I used to (as a child) collect big orb weaving spiders. I put them in huge jars and would watch them do that very thing. If I did not supply them with enough insects, they would eat each other.
They were grisly pets.

I used to collect red ants to watch them build their cavernous homes when I was a kid. On occasion, I would drop in a tasty morsel for them to feed on, until guilt got the best of me and I would turn all the ants loose. Insects are so incredibly methodic in their survival that it's a very scary world indeed.
Sorry I didn't answer sooner, my mother passed away after a long bout with lung cancer. I've been absent from dA for awhile, but since it's nearly my only form of human interaction, it helps to get my mind off things.

SO sorry to hear about your mother. Yeah, it never goes away. However, life goes on as it should.
Be well!

Thanks for your condolences, Robert - and yes, life does go on as it should. It's a bit sobering to be the oldest person in my family now, and the only one with a son to carry on our name. That's a lot of responsibility - I hope I don't fuck it up!

the details are what makes "the whole" complete. :}
idea born from deeper perception of the world..watching a bit outside could give u the opportunity to see the incredible perfection of this divine world we somehow exist in.
luck. lovely realization of the idea.

Ah, lovely piece. I just get lost in all the details. Indeed, the macroworld is a great source of inspiration. When looking up close it often appears very alien, intriguing and adventurous. You've really captured that mood here.
Looking forward to the next.

The spiderweb part is my favourite. The slug in the bottom corner reminds me of the Caterpillar in Alice.

Oh yeah and great work on the web. the wings of the bug on top is the awesomest in the painting I think.

hey it's been a while! love the dark background. there is something weird with the contrast of the whole thing but can't quite put my finger on it.
