Description
Holy crap a guy model!I tried something new again, I used white charcoal and graphite on some colored paper. Fun stuff, but all these new techniques still need some getting use to.
I think I'll leave the mature content label off of this one since there is no nude bits showing.

Woah! Nice work on this. The way there are two sources of light totally makes him look real. And I love his face. You captured a lot of personality there.
It's like, he looks so realistic and tangible, but at the same time, stylized enough to make him look like a fictional character.
Eh, I'm not great at explaining things. I just think this is wonderful.

God damn dude, the hilighting is very impressive. Well the whole thing is.
As a side I've just seen the #60 preview.....particularly the second page.
Good freaking god. I genuinely think you're the most talented comic book artist in work today.

Don't you love to work on paper with a color then slap some white to define the highlights? It's so fun! Working with shading all the time it's rare ya get to define the highlights in the same way. Anyway lookin' great. Yer life drawin' stuff is coming along.

Great job here Ryan! I love how you handled his left shoulder and the corresponding dimple in his chest. Sweet stuff!
I've got to completely disagree with Nagymarci, sorry. While this doesn't feel as confident as your comics work, it will most certainly add a lot of new tools to your arsenal. Learning should never be comfortable. If it is, you aren't stretching. And anyone who thinks that stretching in different directions from what you regularly use is a bad thing just isn't looking far enough ahead.

I disagree with the comment below that says figure drawing blocks your drawing powers. Realistic drawing from life is a totally different medium from comics. I consider myself pretty good at life drawing, but I couldn't do a comic to save my life. For you to dive into this branch of art shows your desire to improve in all areas. A learning curve is to be expected. And I don't think it's going to hurt you one bit. I say keep going! With every drawing you learn something new and with most every session there is one of those "aha!" moments that helps you get better and better at it.

Yeah exactly, each time I learn something new about the anatomy. And on top of that I get to experiment with new pencils and pastels and whatever. It's a blast.

I love seeing an artist who already has a solid grasp on drawing the figure continuing to study the figure. I love the experiment in medium also. I'll have to try the color paper angle.

Naked man? Gaaaah! What's next? Naked superheroes?! I think the white charcoal worked out beautifully, especially on the legs and collar bone. It's so striking.

No offense, but drawing from real life models seem to block you totally. I mean, I'm a huge fan of your work, but this picture is just... well, let's say, not very good

That's ok. So you think I should stop completely then?

Nagymarci In reply to RyanOttley [2009-03-02 16:33:08 +0000 UTC]
I`m not the one who should decide
But really, these are just two completely different things.
If you`re gonna continue drawing from models this way, than you should take some VERY strict anatomy lessons also. If ones doing realistic pictures of real things, its always far too obvious which things hes not familiar yet. So if you want to get good at this, you must take drastic steps.
I cannot say it helps with making comics though, but it might make you more confident about figure drawing. Most illustrators, and comic artists I know are mediocre or less, when it comes to this traditional way of figure drawing. But their sketches are just great. These little, fast sketches seem to be more important in certain professions, and making comics seem to be one of them. They are better to losen up your hands and mind abit, and to capture movements as well...
In short: If you want to to work hours upon hours on a real life drawing, you have to learn all the details youre working with. If you dont want to learn those details, you dont have to work this much on them.

Gesture drawings would be more helpful for my comic work than 3 hours of drawing one figure but experimenting is always good. I know it's not as interesting as some of my comic work, I mean the views are always higher for my comic stuff, but hey I'm learning.

It's a wierd technique, I'm still learning to let the paper do most of the work too.

Was it more sturdy than Construction paper with a toothed texture on one side and smooth on the other?
There is one other brand I think Strathmore makes.
If you ever get the chance, try Stonehenge paper with soft pastels or nu pastels... the surface is wonderful, but there isn't a lot of tooth to it, so nu pastels have a tough time spreading color.
Another technique I learned was getting illustration or a thick bristol board and running a nice coat of Gouche paint over it in a dark hue, maybe monotone and use pastels or colored pencils over it...
You get this texture that is very easy to use and the color really spreads and pops out.

Nice work man. I like seeing your versatility. I'm glad some of you higher profile pros post things like this. It shows the "kids" that you have to do your homework when it comes to honing your craft. It shows that you are not just a penciler but an artist. Thanks for sharing.
