...as opposed to when I became a car fan, in the early '80s when the Second Oil Crisis was still on and people really started to talk about the world running out of oil.

The magazine that first got me interested in cars was, ironically enough, National Geographic's Energy Supplement in February 1981. It had an article on cars, and the first picture in that article was of "The California Kid". In my total ignorance at the time, I thought it was a modified VW, as those were the only cars I knew about that had rounded fenders and running boards.

Ah, the tail end of the "Malaise Era". "The California Kid is a famous custom. It's now in a museum.
