Description These are the banana plants (not trees!) in my backyard. They are growing from the stumps of the plants blown down by Hurricane Dean, which hit Jamaica on 19 August this year.

Awww, that'd make a good photo for one of those inspirational posters, maybe with "Resilience" as the theme word even. I'm glad to see your banana trees are growing back (and are probably even bigger now XD; ). ^^

Yep, they're quite big now. They might bear late this year or early next year.

Technically they're not trees, though. They have no wood in them. They're a large shaft made up of leaves that expand at the top.

When they do bear, I should take a photo of the bunch, or draw a picture, or both. Belafonte deliberately sang incorrect lyrics in his recording of the Banana Man song, because he figured (probably correctly) that most listeners would have been terminally confused by the term: "Six hand, seven hand, eight hand, BUNCH!" Those of us who know bananas, though, are equally confused by his changing "hand" to "foot" and despair at the thought of lifting an eight-foot bunch...

Aww, glad to hear they're doing much better now!

*blinks* This is true...they kind of remind me of bamboo in that way...I'm not sure why, but they do.

Oh, definitely! I'd love to see a photo or picture of them!

Yeah...an eight-foot bunch sounds more than a little daunting.

The difference being that bamboo does have wood in its stalks, at least on the outside...

When I take the picture of a bunch and submit it, I will use it to illustrate what a hand of banana is.

...actually, they're not trees. The plants don't have any wood in them.

That's good to hear! Bananas should come from them in about a year's time, them!

...if another storm doesn't blow them down first... I hope not...

Um... if you didn't know banana plants existed, where did you think bananas came from?

Banana plants can be as tall as trees, but since they have no wood, they are not classified as trees.
