Oh i can awnser that for you osaka! the reason why its called azumanga daioh is becasue the writer did not know what to call it.. and im too lazy to write it all down so go on wikipedia!

What really happened was that I thought of that question and then realized it was something Osaka would think of, so I drew this.
I drew this on two flash cards. The first panel was fully inked on one flash card and the drawing of Osaka in the other three panels was inked on the other. The thought balloon and the words in it were done in pencil and the words were erased after each panel was scanned (except the last), after which the words for the next panel were written in.
