This tutorial explains how to ink, as in where to make your lineart thicker and thinner, which really can be used for traditional and tablet users. Even if you have a tablet, or if you are a traditional inker this has some things that can help you. It has tips for people scanning in their lineart and some brush settings for tablet ppl. Then it goes over the path tool, and how to use it with different brush settings. NO TABLET NEEDED. I haven't tested earlier versions but I think I've used this method since Photoshop 7 and I've used every version of Photoshop since that version, so it should work for most computers.
FAQ:
Is there some way of automatically making the fade extend to the end of the path?
No, not that I know of there's no way to do this. You can always change the minimum width to a heigher percentage, and erase the end to make it tapper off. Or you can just go through the hard way an play around with the fade length in the brush window. Sorry
Why isn't the fade thing working D:
you have not gone into your brush window (F5 or window>brushes), gone to shape dynamic and switched the brush to 'fade' instead of pen pressure under size jitter. If you have not done this, it ain't gonna work. Also, mess with the fade value (the textbox next to the 'control' drop down menu. : )
I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

Oh, thank you so much
I typically use technical pens such as sakura microns and zig millenium pens usually located in the scrapbooking area of the art store, because they are cheap and can be found at just about any arts and crafts store.

o.o great tutorial. how long does it take to digital ink a piece for you? i think my worst qualities is my impatience... haha. need to improve on that, but you definitely get great results.
good work n_n this really helps!

Thank you. Well, I think this might have taken me a little under an hour as it's not too complex. As for impatience, I can understand. I get so impatient when Cging. The best thing for me to do is start out setting times for my work. Like say you are definitely going to work for one hour. Then the next time add fifteen minutes or something and continue like that until doing art for long periods isn't really a big deal... It helps me anyway.
I'm really glad this could help you

This tutorial is so helpful! You gave great examples and it was so easy to follow! The best thing here is how you explained it in a way that "we" could understand, not some dull way that you would write to see if you pass on to the next grade level. Very, very wonderful tutorial Sasha. I haven't found a tutorial yet that explains how to use the pen tool this well and this clear. Awesome job!!
Thank you thank you! Your gallery is filled with equally nice things and I'm wondering why I have't found you here yet..

Thank you. To me, it's important that I understand why I'm doing something before I do it, and some people aren't familiar with alot of art terms or photoshop... I just try to make a tutorial I would've liked to have when I was learning ^^ I'm very glad you found it so understandable. I'm glad I could help in some way.
I'm happy you like my gallery. Your gallery is filled with nice works too~!

Really nice tutorial! But I was just curious, when you use the path tool, do you ever switch between pen sizes? Just to make varying lines? >.< It's a weird question but I was just curious if it might look better to do that (I use the pen tool all the time but all my lineart is the same size)
anyway, really nice tutorial!!

sashas In reply to Naneki [2006-05-04 21:59:08 +0000 UTC]
Oh, yes, I change between brush sizes depending on the paths I'm inking. Using the same size makes it seem flat to me. Just go the brush tool (b) and change the width of your brush, switch back to the path tool and stroke your lines you want that width. I'll make sure that I add that in later...sorry if I was unclear. I didn't mention alot about changing the brush sizes because I inked at about 3x the sample file size and it would not work for a person following my tutorial to use the widths I used.
I am glad that you found my tutorial useful. Thank you.

Oh no, your tutorial was very clear! ^^ I was just hoping maybe I could find tips on making my lineart look more detailed (or pleseant to the eye I guess). Thanks so much for making the tutorial!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to Naneki [2006-05-04 22:28:44 +0000 UTC]
Oh, well to add more detail you do need to make smaller strokes. I usually separate different line widths through the path layers, I don't know it's easier for me. For instance, when inking the hair, I had a path layer for each of the different stroke widths: thick, medium, small, and tiny. This way I can ink all of my thick lines at once, alter the brush size and then ink all the medium lines at once and so on. May that will help?
I'm glad you like it

Thank you. I tried to make it easy to follow. Don't worry about being an amateur at drawing, it's mostly achieved through practice anyway. You'll get there.
I'm glad I could help in some way.

this is so awesome and perfect and everything. admittedly, i knew MOST of what you said but holygosh even i learned something. i never considered the size jitter option, i always used friggin simulate pressure. learning...who knew? XD

Thank you. The first tutorial I did for lineart was like that, step by step stuff. But I tried to be more thorough this time. To me, how to do something is more important than how I do something. I like to see other people use different styles...
I'm so glad I this helped you, I thought ppl were going to be like, "I've seen all this before." Thank you. ^___^

even so, you rarely find people who do their lineart EXACTLY alike. so you'll still benefit. i know how to color and do lineart but i STILL love coming across a really good tutorial. i used to cg the way *runeechan did hers in [link] and [link] and later on i found myself doing it more like =jisuk in [link] and just NOW i used [link] by *pandabaka ! yet it's still my own style because they showed me HOW to do it as opposed to going "this is what i do."
