Louis, Louis, Louis. Start sucking at art, and all these problems would go away.

I agree with the binge-drinking-until-you-can't-draw-a-straight-line idea... affective and likely highly amusing, though you still may accidentally reach for a camera and produce some amazing (and potentially life-altering) image! BEWARE! Leave the camera at home, man! There may even be GOOD OUTDOOR LIGHTING!

No, no...on second thought, there's nothing you can do! You're screwed with inexhaustable talent. Shucks.

Look, I'm not one to start drama or anything, but I think you'd be better off filing this under photomanipulation, rather than claiming to have painted this.

I've been digitally painting for a good five years, and I know when something is painted, and when something went under some heavy altering. Whats more, the JPG pixels are still visible on the image [link] which is something you just dont get on a painting unless its been traveling from computer to computer for a good while, or the website has drastically lowered the quality, and it especially doesn't happen if it's coming fresh from your computer.

So honestly, dont mean to pick a fight, or cause any unwanted drama, but please lets try to be honest here. This is a site for sharing art, not for getting as much attention as possible.

While Louis needs nothing of my defense (as there is nothing in need of defending), I've been irritated into finding it necessary to point something out to you: While looking at the rest of this gallery, there are many more portraits of much more complex human beings than this particular subject. And those other figures? All done in non-digital media, which is, by the way, not something one can cheat at. This wonderful artist is more than capable of creating this piece without hoodwinking anyone, even those who take time out of their apparently limitless days to check up on someone else's business and artistry.

Also, were you not meaning to "pick a fight, or cause any unwanted drama," you would have had enough tact to send a private message, and I'm personally offended you found it necessary to ruin a wonderful work of art with your inadequate (not to mention base) commentary.

I never claimed his was incompetent and unable to make an accurate portrait rendering, that was not my complaint. My complaint was there is substantial evidence HERE in THIS image that it ABSOLUTELY is not 100% hand painted. Not to mention, as he claims this is his "first digital painting", one should think that he would still be learning, and not just have the divine know how to make something so photorealistic, regardless of his traditional skills or not.

And I did not wish to cause drama. I didnt go around to every comment and throw a fit that their compliments were unjust, nor did I wish to have to defend myself to anyone else. I merely wished to post a comment asking him to at LEAST change the category, without having to go through the trouble of reporting him. I never said it was a bad image at all, its merely submitted on false pretenses. The image was painted over, its obvious. The pixels from the reference image are STILL on the painting. When you overlay the two images, everything, absolutely EVERYTHING matches exactly. That kind of thing doesnt happen when you are painting freehand.

With all due respect duskflare,

You seem to be criticizing my painting purely on the state of the image from the link which you provided–

and just so you know, I had No knowledge of its existence on that site Nor do I approve of the heavy degradation of image quality that it has suffered through someone Else's actions–

therefore I have no idea why you would slander the painting that I have posted Here on DA Solely based on a crappy copy of it that you found somewhere else on the internet..

this piece was a practice for me to see how accurately I could paint from a Photo Reference..
and if you are still questioning the "fresh from [my] computer" grain or "heavy altering", when I painted it I checked the little box in the brushes palette for noise so it would Not appear to have that plastic smooth painted look.

however I do appreciate and thank you for your concern,
sincerely,

louis habeck.

Sweetheart, that IS your image. I only took it into photoshop and put a threshold filter over it to show the pixels that were already there. The degraded quality is exactly as it is on THIS website, there was no altering done of any kind. Not only this, even if you DID put a noise filter on it, it would NOT pixelate like this. Like I said, pixelation only occurs after heavy reduction in quality, and even if this had happened on your image, the pixelation would be ALL OVER the image, and not in select spots over the figure.

Not to mention when you overlay the image over your "drawing" it matches EXACTLY. I don't care who you are or what kind of grid you use or how long you spend on something, NOBODY gets every feature, shadow, and highlight in exactly the same place. There HAS to be discrepancies, even the most professional of people have them.

There is nothing wrong with overpaintings, dude. Hell, I know people that do AMAZING things with them, like ~nargynargy for example (only she doesn't try to claim she's painted it all by herself, and freely admits she painted over the images. No one judges her for THAT because its an ARTFORM).

All I'm saying is at least SAY that this is an overpainting, instead of claiming to have painted it 100% on your own, because it's very obvious you didn't. The mods of this website will recognize it immediately as well, if I were so inclined to report you (and I have done so with images JUST LIKE THIS in the past, trust me you are not the first to try and pull this stunt). Just quit the bullshit, and be honest here.

If you still want to convince me I'm wrong, show me some proof. Where's the sketch? Where is a work in progress? Where is a screencap with a layer or two taken off to prove that this was actually put together in steps? If you can do this, then I will apologize and commend you on your skills as the one and only human copy machine.

Did you start reading yet???

And the finished piece is even more amazing than the one sitting on my desktop somewhere.

I think my favorite part is either her hair or the really neat brush strokes at the bottom. They're pretty fantastic, but then again, so is the entire thing.....

Can't wait to see more!

I keep debating whether or not I want to steal a Watchmen poster from the movie theater....the only real hang up, of course, being that they're ginormous and I have no where to put them.

And the whole stealing thing. But psh! What are morals in the larger scheme of things? XD

And I'm glad you like it. I'm in the process of tracking down some of Alan Moore's other stuff (League of Extraordinary Gentleman in particular, but so far no luck...
