Description
January 5th is "National Bird Day" in the United States, so Happy National Bird Day!Here is a photo of two colorful macaws, taken in a touristy wildlife reservation park in Honduras. We were surprised how close we could get to take the photo while they just minded their own business!

This is so cute, cool that you managed to get close without bothering them!

Thanks! It was pretty neat and we were lucky we found them where they were! We saw some other macaws digging nests in the ground, but they were too far away for a clear picture.
When I posed close to them for a photo, one of them actually walked down the tree branch and tugged on my shirt sleeve! It really took me by surprise haha! I guess they're super used to tourists. I just hope that other people haven't been feeding them random junk food, hence their friendliness...

That's pretty cool that they were digging nests though, I thought they nested in trees. ^^
Haha, that's so cool! I'm pretty sure they're very used to tourists since they probably visit everyday. Wouldn't suprise me if some tourists feed them aswell, that's pretty common.

I thought they did too, especially since they fly so well! I'd imagine trees are safer, but apparently they'll dig holes in the ground (or sometimes use a hole in a tree if they can find one) for their nest. It was pretty funny to watch since they reminded me of chickens when they did that.
Haha I agree too, I'm sure some of the tourists managed to sneak them some snacks! These guys were so friendly! But I guess if they weren't, they would have gone into the "time out" cage. They had a section during the tour where some animals were kept that had behavioral problems (whether against other animals or humans) that they were trying to rehabilitate before reintroducing them back out again. That part really made this feel more like an open zoo than a reservation park, but I guess whatever works! As long as their numbers increase and they're safe and happy, that's what matters! Granted, anyone in a time-out cage probably wouldn't be happy...

Haha, some very colorful chickens then. XD
Well, I'm glad they're trying to make the most of the situation, and that's what counts. They're trying to save the animals and rehabilitate them, and sometimes tourism can be a really great way to achieve that.
Haha, anyone that has a time-out is sure to be a little grumpy huh? XD

Very much so! And definitely, the tourism also would help with funding since it can't possibly be cheap, even in a developing country, to maintain such a large area while providing quality care to the animals and maintaining the roads and landscape to please the tourists.
Also your letter arrived! Thank you! I'll get started on it this coming weekend!

Many birds make great pets! What species would you want if you were to get one?

Conure... But I wish I could get a barn owl.
They both look so amazing and beautiful

Great choices! Conures are so friendly and make really fun family pets. The barn owl would be tricky to keep...but I agree that it looks beautiful. We had one at the zoo I used to teach at and I never got tired of pausing to look at it each day.

Thank you! We were pretty lucky with this shot since they were very close! We also saw a few other macaws building nests on the ground and digging, though they were too far to take good pictures of. Still cool to witness though!

They didn't realize you were so close because they eat each others' brains obviously. Look that green one go! Brains are delicious!

What tasty brains! But if I recall, you're more of a lungs and heart person! Get that chewiness! Save the liver for me!
