I've seen many tutorial recommending to do the shadows before filling in the actual colors. I always work vice versa, but perhaps by the help of a tutorial with interesting illustration like this one, I'll finally memorize this and remember to try it sometime. The finished piece of brilliant, by the way.

SeriojaInc In reply to Azugi [2010-01-08 00:19:37 +0000 UTC]

thanks! the reason i do shadows first is because of the way i color, which is mainly cel-shading. I like to color and do the highlights for the color at the same time. so I have to know where the shadows are first xD

Azugi In reply to SeriojaInc [2010-01-12 10:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Cool. : D I, for my part, have always had troubles with cel-shading, probaly because I never grasped this facilitating method of doing shadows first, haha.

Thanks for sharing. Always fun to see "behind the scenes" stuff. My favorite part of any project is the sketches and line work. This drawing turned out beautifully. You have a natural talent for lighting and action composition.

I dont usually save my progress work, as my original lines end up being inked over. but I'm gonna start doing it for the bigger pieces

JennNekoChan [2009-01-31 01:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Wow thank you so much for the tips that really helps out. usually I'll do the flats before the shadows, but having a black and white drawing and doing the shadows first makes it a little easier on the eyes. I really like how you keep everything so simple with the lights and darks. Keep up the fantastic work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeriojaInc In reply to JennNekoChan [2009-01-31 01:31:15 +0000 UTC]

yep, setting the shadows first gives you a better idea of the lighting, so once you get to the colors, you can do both base colors and highlights at the same time...must smoother work-flow IMO.

JennNekoChan In reply to SeriojaInc [2009-01-31 01:43:17 +0000 UTC]

I think I need to practice on my shadow layouts as they are a little too detailed. Do you switch between OC and photoshop when adding the shadows or do you do everything using one program?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeriojaInc In reply to JennNekoChan [2009-01-31 01:51:46 +0000 UTC]

everything on photoshop. i still pencil and ink by hand, mind you.

JennNekoChan In reply to SeriojaInc [2009-02-04 04:18:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah same here, I tend to find that it is nice to have an orginal peice of artwork that you can give to a customer or client. Though digital is much cleaner, you still can't take it to bed and cuddle

I need to ask, maybe I skipped it I don't know, but the layer you put your shadows on, what setting do you use to let the colors show through?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeriojaInc In reply to Jaimep [2009-01-21 01:39:18 +0000 UTC]

also on the multiply setting

thank you, I had wondered if that was it. well that's a new way of shading I have now learnt out of the billions of ways to do it XD yet to find one I prefer though. Thank you for the enlightening tutorial.
