Description
AGH I'm really not sure about this photo, I love how cute the snake is in it, BUT its so dark and the DoF is ridiculos... so I'm submitting it for some feedback from you guys. Go wildanother one of my attempts to use a macro lens at Ed. butterfly park

Wow... I really like the focus on this one! It's kinda intense!

And I think it's fine.

If the snake is really still, try focus stacking. Start at the tip of the nose, take a photo, and keep repeating until you get to the eye. Then you can stack them all together in photoshop. You'd have to be quick though! I know insect photographers use this technique a lot. The eyes are so nice, but that nose is just right in the middle and takes all the attention.

that is a great idea! I'd never heard of it before, thanks!
It wouldn't have worked for this guy because he was constantly moving, but its a great method to try out, I will definatly give it a go next time I am out.

If you were really fast and all professional you might be able to get it to work (high frame rate and quick hands!) but seriously difficult for something that moves. I've never executed it very well haha. Takes practice!

hehe will have to read up and practise then! Especially as it looks like it will be just me and my macro and 17-55mm lens in the near future.

I think you just have to bite the bullet on this one, Kelly. Head-ons with long nosed (and beaked) critters are the bane of macro shooters.
The noise; the darkness; not terrible problems. But that nose can't quite pass muster.

yeah thats what I've been thinking, you can't ignore the snout, its too prominant in shot. Oh well, something to bear in mind next time I go, I'd quite like to try out bubblywums' idea (although no idea how I'd do it in PS!)

I don't know a thing about the "how to" aspects but stacking can give spectacular results.
It's a specific application of layering. Definately worth your time to learn if you want to pursue macro.

mm sounds like I should read up on it, I don't know if I really want to 'get into' macro shooting, but I do have a macro lens and I don't want to waste it!
