Description DescriptionI never feel right making tutorials because, I don't consider myself a very advanced user of Photoshop. I never feel like I'm in the right place telling other people how to do it.

And I know this isn't an advanced tutorial, but many people don't know how to do this. I also know there are other tutorials out there explaining this exact same thing. . .

I was asked recently how to get the white off sketch images and it reminded me of how often I really am asked that. So have a tutorial for everyone in the future who needs to know.

Hey, I have this filter called 'ghost' that converts black and white pencil scans (black n' white images in general) in a transparent lineart layer. --->[link]

You have to do some clean up for the irregularities of the paper afterwards, but it's super easy and fast. I don't know if you can use it with PS7, though.

Anyways, this tutorial was great! very clear when explaining n'all (:

Dang, I got Photoshop Elements *smacks self* I almost wanted to send a huge comment about how useful this will be, and how much better it seems to work then how I try to digitally work on lineart made in the traditional way.

But I think that you did a pretty good job on this tutorial, it looks very organized, and I enjoyed reading through it too

Is that an image of a man running on the wing?

Shinerai In reply to Daemigor [2009-07-29 21:13:36 +0000 UTC]

yes it is, haha

you can just put your lineart layer on multiply in elements. that's about all you can do though.

Daemigor In reply to Shinerai [2009-07-30 00:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have used multipy before. Have you had Photoshop Elements too then, or do you still use it together with normal photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to Daemigor [2009-07-30 01:51:13 +0000 UTC]

I still have it but dont use it as frequently. A lot of the art in my gallery is with PSE C:

Lovely tutorial, my only problem is my sketches are the antithesis of clean. XD I can never sketch lightly.

Thanks anyway! :3

Shinerai In reply to Callisto-Hime [2009-07-29 21:15:28 +0000 UTC]

it isn't a tutorial on how to make a clean sketch, it's about how to pull it off the white )= if you were ever in a position you wanted to get rid of the white in an image (messy sketch or not) this tutorial would still work.

Callisto-Hime In reply to Shinerai [2009-07-30 02:58:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know, I'm just saying my messy sketches make it really difficult to make good lineart. I always have to trace/redraw it. >o<

Shinerai In reply to Callisto-Hime [2009-07-30 07:32:37 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i really understand. ;; i got tired of cleaning sketches before lineart so I totally skip that step these days and line sketches that are almost completely undiscernable

Xephire In reply to ??? [2009-07-29 08:52:32 +0000 UTC]

Heh, this is pretty much exactly the method I use but with different steps XD And while I don't know about earlier versions, it works perfectly fine in PS6.

And I just tried it in GIMP, and it also works there (at least version 2.2, anyway). It takes a tad longer and is slightly different, but it can be done. I couldn't get it to work in Art Weaver, though =/

A very good tutorial. Concise and to the point, complete with helpful images This ought to really help some people out C: (a lot of the tutorials I've seen are to use the multiply method, which doesn't work as well in my experience)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to Xephire [2009-07-29 21:21:57 +0000 UTC]

i use multiply sometimes, but it really depends on what kind of effect you want to get. I'm glad it works in PS6 and GIMP! i want to find out if there's a way to work it in Elements, but I haven't yet. ]: I was afraid the dark skin on my photoshop would make it hard to see, but no one's mentioned it yet so I guess it's fine.

there is a stickmen in your wing o,O
hmmm lock my outline layer the difference to yours is, that i can draw directly on the lines of the layer instead of a new layer under the outlines to do that
