Description 1955 Mercedes Benz Engine Compartment WIP

So, more progress, I'm happy with it so far.

The majority of the compartment is done. Yay!
The other parts of the compartment are relative to the body and frame of the car.

Doing some research on this car I've found some good reference images of the frame, so creating it will be easier... on another note it reminds me of the frame of an old VW Beetle in that it's flat, with ribs, and a tunnel....

At least you used the word computer!

By the way - Raquel needs some slightly better drawing tools. She feels that she's at a point where she's no longer developing her skills. I've found that a small drawing kit, or a new set of pencils and pad seem to do the trick in these cases. Pearl Paints has a nice $11 learn to draw set. I've given a few of them as gifts, and the sketch artists have flourished. Let me know what you think. [link]

Yeah, I had to spend SO much money that I've not been able to get art stuff lately - I have seen a slightly larger (but similar) set that came with a 100 sheet 16x20 pad.... for not much more... (I think it was $24) that I'd like to get her..

I can't do it this week, but maybe I can scrape together enough for a gift card to throw in part, eh? They had one "For Dummies", hate the title, liked the kit. At about $24

This one I saw is called 'Young Artist Starter Kit' - it had color pencils, markers, pastels, some patterns, a book of 'how to' and the big pad.... Hopefully get it soon for her....

That sure sounds better than Drawing For Dummies... In the meantime, she needs to pick a light source direction, and add shading. It will help bring her characters to life in her own head, and thereby they'll grow from the page.

I haven't taught her that yet - but the art classes she has at school this year, should be teaching that and perspective and other stuff....

I just suggested she try a little shading on one of her "chibi's". Still not sure what those are.

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-07 01:04:47 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn't get it on sale. But I've made decent use of everything except the movie pose sets. I've assumed that since DAZ does crappy poses, the movie ones were just as pathetic. But I suppose they could work for an avatar.

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-07 08:46:52 +0000 UTC]

I tended to use the Pose - as a way to get it 'near' what I wanted and then moved it myself from there...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-08 01:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Me too, the poses are almost always just a starting point, so I don't have to move absolutely everything from scratch. I even try all of the human and animal poses on the different models, just to see what might be interesting. The dragon poses work very well on the fish, for some odd reason.

I found that V3 poses did some interesting things for the Water Dragon... and the the Gorilla poses worked well for M3... I did a panther pose for V3 once too...

Ah! A man after my own heart! I had a conversation with a long-term 3D artist, who had never once tried other creature poses on anything else, but what they were made for. She was surprised that I had used a human pose for the camel, or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-08 03:44:53 +0000 UTC]

When you think about HOW the pose works, from the 3d side of it - ie it's just moving bones - then you realize that almost any pose will work for almost anything... it's the 'movement' limitations for the the thing that tends to be the issue in the end... although - as we have both found - some will work - to a point of being a good start pose to get where we want them to actually be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-08 23:37:45 +0000 UTC]

The pose just moves a model's bones from what the normal default pose is, to some angle. So a camel running, makes a human's legs go too far backward at the hip, and , bends the knees in the wrong direction. I'm just never satisfied with the poses that others settle for. I guess it might be a good idea to make up a pose pack, eh?

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-08 23:38:56 +0000 UTC]

I had thought of doing that - and some better lighting sets - most of them are WAY too bright or WAY too dark for a decent render...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-08 23:52:11 +0000 UTC]

I never use light sets. They always seem to be scene specific, and look like crap away from that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-08 23:56:19 +0000 UTC]

See, that is the issue - the lights are for a scene NOT for the MODEL in the scene (think how nice it would be to have the lights stay with the model - focused on the model no matter where in the scene the model is (and lets also add that the model could be a car, V3, a frackin loose marble... whateveryouassignthelightto.... )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-09 00:27:53 +0000 UTC]

I've tried a few light sets for the models. I still delete them all, and do my own. It's like any other preset/default. Not quite right, but might be repaired.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-09 01:10:40 +0000 UTC]

That's why DAZ|Studios need better thought out lighting for the model...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-10 01:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps something where just the intensity, or particular lights could be selected. Perhaps some kind of "morphs". With dials to change the angles, colors, or intensity of the whole lighting set. Still relating to the model, or the scenery.

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-10 01:44:10 +0000 UTC]

oh, now your into conceptual stuff ...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-10 01:56:11 +0000 UTC]

At one point the same idea could have been placed on other morphs. What if you could add muscles to a male model, or make a female model's breasts bigger/smaller? So why not lighting set morphs?

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-10 04:58:57 +0000 UTC]

It seems logical that it could be done - (not that I have a clue HOW) but, then there are people that I'm sure would, spout out a couple of thousand lines of code, followed by, oh that's so easy..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-10 15:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Let me see... Pose presets, are static. Click one, click another. That would be easy for light sets. I'm just wondering if one could save the light set in some morph/character or d-form preset. If all the lights could be linked, or parented, perhaps. Where you move them as a unit, point them actually using the 3D space... Otherwise, it's just a bunch of lights.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-10 19:49:42 +0000 UTC]

The lights would need to be somehow 'attached' to a focus point (like the thing that allows the eyes to both be moved at the same time... a null - this null would need to be parented to the obj/model that you want focus on....)

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-11 01:24:51 +0000 UTC]

I saw something for the Maya model, that did an eyeball point/focus. So that you could have her look at something. I don't remember where, but I'd bet something like that could be used for pointing lights too... Just a different "eye".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2007-11-11 02:07:18 +0000 UTC]

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2007-11-11 16:06:51 +0000 UTC]

I found several python utilities. One actually was for pointing more than one light at a time! I found them on a Renderosity search for utilities. I never found the eye pose utility, but these may work. If I can make a light set that is "morphing", wouldn't that be sweet!?!
