Description This was a piece I did in addition to "Escape This Skin " as part of a school project to produce editorial style art that would help in the education of the general population on transgender issues. The particular focus of this piece was the growing rejection of nonbinary people from the community- there is a constant flow of love and acceptance, at least from the majority of queer people ( and no, I have no intention on using LGBT, take a queer history or queer studies course and then we'll talk ) for binary trans men, and binary trans women, but nonbinary people are constantly excluded from nearly all of the safe spaces created- spaces exist for cis women, trans women, women in general, trans men, gay men, lesbian women, bisexual men and women- but nonbinary people are not permitted to feel safe in any of those spaces, because they do not fit under any of those labels.

It is distinctly lonely and alienating, and particularly in the modern climate of near vicious protectiveness over such spaces, and the violent response to anyone deemed "not suited" for them, nonbinary people often talk themselves out of attending what could be very beautiful and wholesome experiences for everyone involved ( I know I've done it ). There is this idea that if you attend something for women, you are pretending to be a woman, and if you attend something for men, you are pretending to be a man, and by doing either you are shaming the entire trans community- nevermind the idea that if you are nonbinary you are not "trans enough" ( and yes, I realize that gender non-conforming trans people also suffer this stigma, but nonbinary people are getting the limelight in this piece ).

Nonbinary is a massive umbrella encompassing a number of identities- some more easily defined than others- and we make up a huge percentage of the queer community, yet we are the ones who are distinctly ignored and rejected.

Like "Escape This Skin" I would like to make prints of these, and donate proceeds to organizations that help all trans people, however there will be some time between now and when I can make that happen.

This piece, beyond being an emotional outpouring for class, is my way of asking the queer community one question.

What about me?

[EDIT]: Hateful or super unrelated comments will be hidden. Those posting hate will be blocked, and if I am not fast enough in hiding comments I encourage others NOT to engage, and simply to also block the offending party. I understand that this is a pretty hot topic issue for some people, and that it does in some ways tie in to other issues, but I would prefer if comments were kept relevant to either my art, or nonbinary representation/acceptance! Thank you all for understanding!

Hi may I feature this? I'm starting an LGBTQ magazine and want to feature community artists. I would of course credit you and link back to your social media.

Hi hon! Sorry for taking so long to get back to this, I've been away from social media for the most part!
Would it be alright if I asked a little bit about the magazine? Is it online or printed? I'd love to check it out!

It's alright. The magazine is a non- profit educational and lifestyle magazine. It's main purpose is to share a diverse range of voices in the LGBTQ+ community, including those who don't get as much attention. Like People of different racial backgrounds, little known sexualities, and non-binary genders. It's not in print only online.

Thank you so much!
A big part of my intent with this and its sister piece was making sure the message could reach the people beyond the ones they're about- so it means a ton to me when those who aren't trans or aren't nonbinary see them and recognize something in them!

lmao dude stop being so focused about whether someone has a penis or a vagina its lowkey creepy

its really not that hard to respect someone's pronouns, gender is not the same as biological sex, its been stated over and over again and confirmed by scientists themselves (and not to mention! the concept of being a nonbinary person has been around for just as long as trans people and other lgbt members! its not something that has been a trend in 2010 its been there for a long time)

no shit things are gonna be complicated. not everything is gonna seem easy. Gender itself is a complicated thing to get into. the LGBT+ community is complicated. Every community has their own complicated shit going on. nobody gives a shit to be special, they want to be what they're comfortable with and if nobody is willing to respect that, they're just as in the right to block that person and not deal with them as much as they are in the right to complain about someone's identity lol

Hey friend!! I really appreciate your response here, but that person basically spammed every single person that commented on my work, as well as a lot of other pieces about trans folks. Especially in keeping with not arguing on a post meant to bring attention to an issue, I'd rather people just not engage them, even if they reply further.

Thank you a lot. <3

I've gotten so many positive comments regarding this from other nb artists, and it makes me so happy I chose to do it!!

This is a beautiful piece and I can't believe how ppl belittle and outcast nonbinary people even though they're (technically) part of the LGBT too (like how pansexual ppl aren't considered part of it either)
Nonbinary people are just as valid as everybody else <3

They are a spam account targeting work done by trans folks haha- someone let me know they were doing this, and I think if anything it just brings attention to an old piece of mine that it wouldn't otherwise get- kind of defeats their own goal, in the end.

ngl this is a big part of why I miss the days when we were all queer back in the 90's/early 2000's- it was a lot more inclusive as a community term, and didn't give anyone an excuse to try and exclude anyone. Pansexuals are valid, & the white stripe in the trans flag has always represented nb people, so the ones rejecting us can buzz off, honestly.

I'm so glad that I could bring this message to life as well as I did- I very rarely see art depicting the issues nonbinary people face, and I'm glad to be one of those that did step up and speak about it, and I'm so glad that it seems to be having a positive impact on people, even if it's on a small scale. <3

Picolaa [2018-05-10 12:41:50 +0000 UTC]

I believe this is a beautiful message. It's often where people cannot accept nonbinary. And I find it saddening. I believe we should all we accepting of another. I don't really identify as anything now though I'd happily include nonbinary people. <3 I've met a lot online and they are some great people!

I highly suggest you ask yourself why you felt the need to comment here. Why you felt the need to view this piece at all. This is not with the intent of being rude, but self reflection is very important to one's mental health, which you seem to believe you know quite a bit about.

More directly on topic, before you leave ignorant comments again, I highly suggest that you take a queer history lesson, or even study history at all, and see how prevalent nonbinary identities have been, and how long they have been around ( hint: the earliest recording I know of is the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten, who was depicted as both male and female ). It is vital to research a topic before you outright deny it.

That said, I hope you discover the source of your unrest with the concept, and why you feel the need to go near it when you do not believe in it, and that you have a nice day, despite your attempt to bring down others.

i've personally never understood why people try to exclude non binary members of the community, they are just as valid as any of the rest of us and deserve the same damn respect! im a very feminine man myself and i know even when i complete transition i will probably always get confused for a woman or androgynous and i've embraced that, im not non binary myself but i know i'll never look how anyone expects a 'typical' man to look and i might get flack for that so fuck 'em. what i am and what i look like should not define me, it shouldn't define anyone, we should all have our safe spaces

The world is a really hard place to be for anyone who doesn't conform to binary gender standards, and I am terribly sorry that you get frequently misgendered, but I'm very glad you can be proud of who you are despite the opinions of others!

It's always good to have somewhere to go for support, and I hope that one day we can reach a point where those spaces aren't needed any longer.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverAureus In reply to SkyJynx [2018-05-11 04:33:00 +0000 UTC]

it really is. i will hopefully look more masculine one day but i do know that i'll never be a typical 'macho' man or anything close, as one of my friends has told me im a "lovely lil femboi" and while i don't want to be that and if anyone calls me that again i'll probably hit them but i feel i'll embrace certain aspects of it like i show no shame in wearing nail polish or glittery things that aren't typically masculine and to some people make me look even more like a girl. we don't have to fit into boxes no two people are alike no one would ever fit into the same box!

sorry i went on a little ramble there but i also agree in the hope that one day we won't need safe spaces because everywhere will be a safe space

SkyJynx In reply to SilverAureus [2018-05-14 04:40:24 +0000 UTC]

No worries! I think that breaking down boundaries between gender norms is very important, especially for trans people- nonconformity needs to be more widely accept for more than just cis people, and I hope that one day you'll be gendered properly!
