Description
My entry for the Devious Desktops competition. Going for a tropical beach feeling here and tried to stick with a "interesting object but space to put your icons" composition and overall I think I did an ok job. Also gave me an excuse to try a few new things in c4d and octane with a defined brief, which was nice. Really liking the making frosted glass textures in octane. Also included a clay render version as people who saw the WIP version seemed to quite enjoy this colour scheme as well (although it fits the competition theme less):

This is really impressive man.
I've got to say, I'm not used to seeing 3D modeling being used quite this way before. I'ts pretty interesting...
I'm by no means 3D modeling expert, or any art expert for that, but here's my honest feedback:
Overall, 9/10. There's only 2 things to mention here since i think you've nailed everything else.
Concept:
The concept is original and amazing, i love the way it's all been put together. I'm no expert, but I've done some 3D work before and i know that doing something like this isn't easy, so well done on the execution.
Design:
As i said above, the design is great overall, although:
A little bit too much empty space for my liking, I think the design could have done with a bit more spacing. I understand the whole desktop thing, but i only keep about 4 or so icons on my desktop. (maybe that's just me?)
Also, not enough colour. When i think of 'Summer' I think of reds, blues, yellows, the sea, nature, etc. However, this seems to focus more on yellows and greens, with a touch of red. Some more tones or colours would be a great addition.
You could have added some more colours to really make the centerpiece 'pop' or draw some more attention to the writing in the back with brighter colours - something like that.
Overall, there's nothing more to say than that. I've seen some of your other work, and I've seen some with loads of colours (like Aurora) that really just pop and catch your eye - That's what i kinda feel is missing here.
So yeah, other than that - It's beautiful. Great work!

Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it. I did really want to push the "warmth" of the piece and so was focusing on the yellows and oranges. But you are right, maybe a couple of additional contrasting colours wouldn't have been a bad idea artistically.

Yeah, lots of entries that completely flew under my radar made it into the semis! Too bad, really could've used a monitor...
Definitely don't want to pick only 3 from those; even narrowing it down to like 10 would be quite the challenge. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, tho

I've been living under a rock lately so I won't be able to participate in this one anymore lol. Good luck with your entry, this will be one of the more creative ones most likely!

I feel like the results are quite unpredictable and every time the winners are announced there's a huge outrage going on which makes me want to stay away from official DA contests as far as possible. That being said, imo anything can happen! It all depends on the "vision" of the jury so good luck.

yeah for sure although they usually have much bigger rewards in these public contests in the range of 1k+ USD in cash and more. On the other hand it might keep away the extreme pros so the chances for everyone else will be higher.

Thanks mate. Definitely back into the groove at the moment, although a few of these I have been sitting on for a while, so the rate of submissions will definitely slow down soon. But gonna keep at it
