Description
After playing Wind Waker so long ago, I'm still fascinated about how the Hyrule there actually looks like. You're always on this vast sea with a few islands, and at most you get to explore the castle and a bit of the environs of Hyrule iself. But I think as everyone else I guess that wasn't enough for this lovely game. I went searching the net for any fanmade Wind Waker Hyrule, and I find NOTHING. Maybe didn't search THAT much, but I expected to yield some results.
That's when I decided to take this project upon myself.
When making this map, one of the annoying issues was the amount of islands on the Wind Waker map I based it of.
That is mountain tops. They are many, which makes Hyrule almost too spiky, so I also ruled out a bunch. Some island I guess could be artificial or floating (in some way). In that way, I reduced the amount and made my Hyrule a little less spiky.
Then I tried to get as much glimpse of the Hyrule Castle area I could to make a nice rendering.
Another nice touch is the relation to all areas I've placed out.
Familiar areas from the loose prequel, Ocarina of Time.
Also the connection of the Hyrule days to the Great Sea present day. The square grid is helpful for Great Sea comparison.
- Lost Woods where the Great Deku tree takes super growth to stay above sea level.
- Zoras Domain at the base of what would be Greatfish Island, Jabun's place where he would later move.
- Gerudo Desert with Gerudos Domain also has an interesting idea. Tetra mentioned that Forsaken Fortress used to be a base for other pirates than themselves, this could've pointed towards the Gerudos.
- Kakariko Village is close to what would later be Windfall island, a possible mountain top for their descendents.
As a bonus I've also added some few new locations of this Hyrule which could be interesting. Some might even be dungeons to explore. Too bad that there might not have been a Link living in this era though.
The whole result of this work is a Hyrule in Wind Waker's cel-shaded style that all will hopefully enjoy!
For details you can download the original full-sized image.
Enjoy!

Do you think any of the land was "raised" when the land was flooded by the goddesses?

No i just means some of the land was raised up into a bunch of peaks, kinda like what happend with skyloft. The rest of the world probably remained unchanged, as in taller lands stayed above the flooding as it does.

Yeah makes sense. I mean Hyrule itself is basically in a really big basin in most versions. I was just curious if the old town had been raised since they matxh so well to the old world

I loved the Wind Waker, but the thing I hated in the game was the Great Sea. it would of been a better map if the they used your map, and used wind changing for other things then sailing.

Ehhh I'd say keep the great sea and all but make Hyrule explorabable like originally planned and have the winds be controlled even under water.

Thank you so much for appreciating my world design!
The wind changing has always been seen as an annoyance more than it adds to realism.
I wouldn't have mind if they used some other function involving winds.

This is so cool. I like how you kept the lines to indicate where above land (or sea, rather) islands were. This makes perfect sense, I at first thought the Hyrule area was small, but once I got action replay and did infinite magic and moon jump and found that Hyrule expands on for hours (flying) at least towards the Zora's domain/ Gerudo Desert area.... Anyway, awesome job.

It's a shame they left out most of ground-level Hyrule from the final game.
But I get a sense that we might get something like the expansive area in the next Zelda for WiiU.

The funny and sad thing is from what I've heard this was the original intention of the game designers i.e. to explore Hyrule both above and below the waves. Apparently the original design for the game was something similar to the 2000 Tech demo, that early alpha was scraped in late '01, with the designers having to make the game from scratch. Having lost a at least a years work of planning and work they were already pressed for time; ( They had to make a new story and game to match) so by the time the release date began to approach WW was behind schedule. In fact long after the second over-world was junked they ended up having to scrap a portion of the nearly complete (70-80% complete) game to make it on time. Originally there was a water dungeon for you to receive Naryu's Pearl from Jabun as well as an Ice temple for a third sage ( which makes sense retroactively- the master sword is powered by the three flames of the Goddesses from Skyward Sword, thus Three sages to pray for the flames to remain bright and their light to remain within the sword.) I wish that you could explore Hyrule in WW but O' well it's not to be.

Makes sense. I bet everyone think that Wind Waker had a shortage of dungeons compared to other Zelda-games.
And the idea of a third place to power up the Master Sword, considering how many things works by the number 3 in the games.
It would be wonderful if they actually took the time to fill out what's missing in the HD-release for WiiU, but I'm guessing that's not going to happen. It would probably be a too big change from the original.
But I guess you shouldn't really complain either.

this is realy good well maped out but i always wondered how or where the the tower of the gods is you know how it emerges right where the castle is yet their is no pillars or towers that high oh well great job love the map

Thanks!
The tower first emerges from under the water, so my thought is that the tower is not standing on any solid foundation.
Just apply 'Hyrule-magic' and I guess it makes sense.

For being a kingdom down below, the Great Sea was still cluttered with several structures that I had to remove from the calculation. Mainly the odd eye-reefs. They were probably the ones most out of place.

For the Lost Woods. If you noticed in Wind Waker, the Forest Haven is actually the first Great Deku Tree's hull. The next Great Deku Tree (The one that was born in Ocarina of Time) is the one inside the Forest Haven. And as mentioned by the Korok's when you talk to them, the Forbidden Woods is their old home. So then that must be Kokiri Forest.

Sol-Zephyr In reply to SamuelJamesAran [2012-05-30 11:16:53 +0000 UTC]
Interesting idea. I've never thought about that.
But the Forbidden Woods doesn't have to be Kokiri Forest.
It could just be a great forest-structure they used as
their home until it was taken over by evil.

I would have loved to got to more temples at least after getting the triforce. Like to help free the undersea kingdom from Ganon's clutches. There could have been a lake temple, a death mountain temple and a desert temple.

I think Dragon Roost Cavern already snatched the Death Mountain spot, cause it probably is Death Mountain.
Undersea Hyrule looked like a ghost country though. Even if I wanted it more traversable, it might have seemed too empty.

Of course I was hoping you'd be walking to the remaining temples that way.
But no, you were forced back to the sea. Nintendo just thought it would take too much time with a whole second overworld. But wishful thinking is wishful thinking!

Take too much time? What the heck the triforce hunt is what took up too much time they added that in there why not add the other temples? *sighs* Oh well all in all it was a great Zelda game You can explore a little of Hyrule field though...it's not that fun to be honest or maybe it's just me :/

O__O Whoa. Wind Waker was the first Zelda game I played (though not the first one I finished) and I loved it. And now you do this....Whoa. Just....Whoa. Thank you so much for making this. The only thing missing would be a mountain pass somewhere leading OUT of Hyrule but it's no biggie. I love it as it is anyway.

Sol-Zephyr In reply to Ellenlome [2011-03-31 17:32:31 +0000 UTC]
Whoa. But I've hardly ever seen Hyrule have a clear exit from the kingdom. Only one I can think of is Twilight Princess where Hyrule connects to Ordon, which itself is a short dead-end itself.
Thanks for stopping by!

Ellenlome In reply to Sol-Zephyr [2011-04-10 11:19:36 +0000 UTC]
XD Yeah, there isn't actually an exit OUT of Hyrule, but that's mostly for the purpose of the game (can't have the Hero wandering off after all). I highly doubt any country could survive if if was that isolated.

Awesome work
The only thing that doesn't make sence as put forth by the designers is how Ganon's tower can be directly under the forsaken fortress, when its in the opposite direction and not very far away at all
I spent my entire time hoping that i'd get to explore hyrule once the barrier broke but no I WAS KEPT ON A SET PATH!!! couldn't even see Death Mountain from down there.
anyway, phenominal work for giving us a preverbial banquet for thought. Kudos to you man.

The warp goes between the tower and the fortress, but I'm not sure it's stated that Ganon's Tower lies directly below. It might just give the wrong impression.
