Description The famous NZ cabbage tree. This one I spotted sitting on an exposed rock on a farmers hillside. Gave the farmer a wave as I drove off. NZ has a right of access rule that is often the norm and could be adopted here.
Taken out the back of fernhill Napier Hawkes Bay

Nice work mate, shame about that road in the background though - I like the idea of this in some remote, long forgotten land...

What are the right of access rules over there?

pretty much the country belongs to the people and you have the right to access it. Not sure if its a law but its an unwritten law. So framers in general will give you access across their land if you want to get to a good fishing spot for example. But a few people are getting narky and putting up gates locks an signs and this is creating a little controversy at the mo.

Bit different to Oz, no entry without permit just about everywhere now and locked gates where I used to roam freely 30 years ago.
Fifty meters either side of all permanent and major perennial waterways is crown land here and free to access (supposedly) as long as you stay within the 50m zone and not cross a paddock.

I cross the paddock and the fences.. cockies seem to be pretty blase when they see I have a camera and not a 303!

Shooting a coo beastie with a camera isn't as costly as shooting it with a 303 or other bang pole - probably influences their attitude a little.
