Description
This sprung from *BlueFlyer 's journal entry about representing oneself as a horsie of one's favourite breed. I realise I don't really draw horses a great deal nowadays, though I used to a lot, and they're a lot of fun to revisit. (This was originally supposed to be a silly doodle ref, for marking and colour experiments only, to be stuck in scraps. But I ended up shading and tweaking and now I like it enough to put in my main gallery. xD)So, meet Cider. :3
She's not going to be a replacement for Swift or anything like that, but she is supposed to represent me as a horse. I like the idea of keeping her around because I do have quite a number of friends that represent themselves with horses or other ungulates, and it'd be nice for me to have a horsie of my own that they can pal around with!
She's supposed to be a Thoroughbred mare but I don't know how successful I was at making her look like one. >.>; I love those horses, we had retired racers at my old stable and they were lovely things. <3 And yes, chestnut is my favourite horsecolour, go figure.
I couldn't decide between Autumn Apples and Cidre Doux (French sweet cider) for her registered name (but apparently a show name and a registered name can be separate? horse-savvy peoples, please enlighten me. x.x) Though I think if I could only pick one I'd go with Cidre Doux - fits better for a racehorse I think. :B heh.

Ahhhsfsds this is awesome~~ : DDD I *love* your horse style. <3 Omg. The profile is amazing.. for some reason I'm really enamored of the line that goes from the neck, along the mane, and to the ears.. :33 Bawww~~
Also~~ I love your coloring style. <33 It looks so smooth and paintery. And the shading sdfjksd, especially around the face, it's so delicious and realistic looking~~ D: Arrrar~~ And random, but I like how you used two different colors to shade the hooves and forelegs.. :33 Like separating *this* white from *that* white, lawl.
<33 Hee~ Cidre Doux is very pretty.

<333 I love your ramblings silly! Thank you so much. It's really interesting to hear it from someone else because they often notice things I wasn't aware of, so yay! I actually stopped drawing horses for a while, people were comparing them to Spirit and I could see I was falling into that style trap too, so I took some time off to study some real horsies! I still need to work on the bodies, legs and hooves some more, but at least I've improved on the heads and faces! Sorry I haven't been stopping by lately. D: Generally I've just been lax about commenting because of STUFF and also I watch too many people. I need to poke through and comment on the things I've missed!

Hahah, no problem~~ Cx That's the reason I love comments; they're not just ego-patters. xD It's neat to see how people see and interpret things.
Ohh, Spirit. xD It's a really interesting style, but it kind of makes me wonder when I see people who *only* draw Disney- or Sonic- or whatever-style.. what did they do before they got interested in Disney/Sonic? |8 I understand if they just started drawing, but if they've been doing it for years, that's.. a little sad. D: They need to find their own styles, lawl. And pssh, your horses look gorgeous to me. <33 Anatomy, everything~ As for working on things, I figure if it looks good and you can tell what it is, you're okay. xDDD
Awwh, I understand. Cx You must be swamped, lol.. don't worry about it. :33 Haha, I tend to let messages pile up to the point where I don't feel like it _ever_ and do mass nuking. O:

Hmn, that's cool! 83 I wonder if I should try that out... I love those big draft horses, although the leaner racing ones are nice too. Hmnn... =/
But Cider looks so cool! 8D I absolutely love how she looks, really realistic but your style is so clear there... ~ I love her design too. ^^ Somehow... its so much more believable than some of the outrageous character designs I see out there... granted, those tend to be more on wolves, not on horses. =/
I love the backgruond texture too ^^

DO IT. then Cider can have a horsebuddy. I'd like to see how you draw horses in your style! They're such interesting and challenging animals to draw, especially if you're not used to them.
Thanks so much Rainney! Yeah, I just wanted Cider to be an ordinary horse, no magic powers or anything. I'll need to design some more horses for her to have as barnmates, I am getting ideas! I generally tend to prefer more natural looking shades and patterns, though it's fun to go wild with unnatural colours once in a while. :3
(Photoshop filters save me when I have no idea what background to put. *hint*)

OHWOW.
An undetailed horse.
Best. thing. ever.
I get so bored with excess lines but into horses fzces and bodies - I mean, a leg's still a leg without all the tendons being accentuated.
And look at this... It's amazing!
The simplicity is so origional and happy, and gives a really origional feel.
Mmmm... Cider.

omg heehee! I hadn't thought about it like that before, but then I don't see a lot of drawings of horses that are overly done around dA. I know that horses have lots of bones and muscles and intersting stuff going on under the skin, but I'd rather render those with shading and light than with a hard line! I agree with you - anatomical drawings can stay in textbooks! thanks Ronto. makes me happy you like her so much! (And by the way - I'm completely glad to draw baby Pickles and Dodger for you. xD)

I didn't know who you were talking about for a second there, because I always seem to think of them as 'Dodger and Pickles' rather than 'ickles and Dodger'... so when you said baby Pickles I was thinking ... 'Baby what?'

Yeah it is! I do have a horsy side I guess, the Horse is one of my four pillars in the Chinese Zodiac - I was born in June (fifth Lunar month), the Month of the Horse. :3
Yes I had to give her a snip! Both to fill in for Swift's white muzzle marking and also because my favourite horse back at our stables had a snip and star like that. I don't think he was a thoroughbred though, but eh, she's my character! xD
thanks hun!

Yep, most people don't know there are four animals that represent you in the Chinese Zodiac and four elements for each animal - for your birth year, birth month, birth day, and birth hour. You can find out what they are here [link] , but I'm afraid my knowledge ends there.
indeed!

And yes, those socks are an original Swift-marking and they suit me - contradictory and odd, yet somehow balanced - so I had to translate them to Ci too.

How do You doing it? xD
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to blue-foxy [2008-08-01 00:52:31 +0000 UTC]
Like I told you, I practice. If I'm unfamiliar with an animal I try to draw from photos and understand its structure, then go to the details. With practice I am sure you can get where you want to be.
(and hey - I only upload the stuff that's good. honestly I draw so much more than I post, it's just that I'm unsatisfied with the stuff that I don't post! xD)

Man, you're so awesome. I can't draw horses at all, well, any type of equidae at that. I really should pratice more. You have the anatomy downpacked more than I would have. XD;
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to Black-Kalak [2008-08-01 00:57:13 +0000 UTC]
Well I used to ride them. I took lessons for about four years back in the day, and I think just being around them helped a lot. I observed a great many things by watching.
I'm sure you'd do fine! I'd love to see some horsies in that style of yours!

Black-Kalak In reply to swift-whippet [2008-08-01 01:39:35 +0000 UTC]
D: I only rode horses when we had those kiddie carnivals ;-;
I think that's the only help for me. Live reference. It's probably why I'm so attracted to dogs. Been around them all my life. :< Or maybe I should just go to the zoo sometime and observe things.
And trust me XD; I've already tried. I did a zebra and the legs looked like sticks. Then I tried a moose upon request and...it was...indescribable. D:

Awww! I love how Cider's colors are a match for Swift. Now Scylla wants to drag her over to the Vale for an autumn sightseeing tour because the two of them would look so darn pretty with all that warm-colored foliage.
Your characters always have such warmth of personality in their faces, Swiftwhippet. I love seeing you've updated!
