“Feb. 6th - Mew gave birth. We named the newborn Mewtwo”
no this isn’t a joke, more like playing with a what-if idea where the story went with the old game journal entries where Mewtwo was actually stated as Mew’s offspring. What if he was born as a regular Mew but stolen by Team Rocket and experimented on and turned into what he is now. He has no idea and Mew probably wouldn’t tell him for fear of how he’d react

Yeah, perhaps they just needed a stronger base like the body of an actual mew. For all we know it never survived the experimentation but they still got Mewtwo from the results so he was still technically reborn

I interpreted the strip a little differently.
The present day Mew was actually the baby, and their parent was killed. They view mewtwo as another parental figure, and cuddle up to them like they used to cuddle their parent.

When I read those journals, the context always read to me as the scientists capturing Mew and conducting experiments on the embryo inside it, or creating one inside its body to be experimented on. Either way, it is an interesting concept.

That could be too, the experiments starting in the womb and when he was born he looked more like the current Mewtwo, it just makes me wonder what they did to Mew, I guess just tossed her aside as they had no need for her after that. I also just assumed they had tracked mew down in the wild and studied her closely and waited for the right moment to strike and take the baby

Yeah, my headcanon was that Mew was let go since the whole point of creating Mewtwo was to make something even more powerful than Mew, and was (theoretically) a complete success, so they had no reason to keep Mew around. Besides that, Mew is both too playful and too innocent to do the sorts of things an organization like Team Rocket would want, whereas Mewtwo is a clean slate they can raise and teach from birth to obey and operate to their standards.

It's possible! Between the meta of localization between American and Japanese versions of the game, and the storytelling of a journal being less specific than a detailed data log, there could be a bunch of means that Mewtwo was actually created.
