I like the civilian aspect to the thug. Waiting around on a highway all day is actually hard work. Most people who are so poor they have to prey on others in an apocalypse have very little in means of entertaining themselves.
If he really is going to carry his lute/guitar around under the assumption that he might have to retreat permanently, I think it would make sense for him to carry at least a light bag of supplies, and another bag to quickly snatch up loot and run.
I have several bandit characters on my gallery you could check out, like the Kalistown Mercenary on page 2. He's less of a highway bandit and more of a hired muscle so he doesn't bother backpacking.
