Description
Illustration of the death of Nathan Hale.I've been meaning to draw him for ages, and finally did.
His arm looks a bit weird because it was supposed to be tied behind his back. Otherwise I'm happy, 'cos it's loads better than the drawing of him I did on a book report cover when I was 11.

Gorgeous portrayal of such a dramatic scene. This is a wonderful tribute, thank you very much and the violet colors make a nice touch to the mood of this painting

"My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country." Spoken like a TRUE patriot. How come we don't have people like him nowadays. They just run in2 battle w/out a thought.

This reminds me of the man in the revolutionary war who spied on the british.
He dressed up as a Dutch teacher or something and when they hung him he said
"I only reggret that i have one life to loose for my country"
I hope thats what you were going for maybe
ITs great!!!

I must say that you did a wonderful job with this and I love your work with the colored pencils and markers. I love the way you captured this tragic moment so beautifully.

Great job here! I'm also fascinated by the American Revolution and the brave, great thinkers who founded my country.

Very nice! The hand looks just fine to me -- that's how it would look at that angle, after all. It didn't distract me or anything. I love the border broken by the tree, and the leafy trim on the right side. His expression is very good, too, as are the soldiers in shadow, and the noose. I've always been rather touched by and endeared to Nathan Hale -- I guess it's the mythological sort of "everyman goodness" he had; he wasn't out there doing huge dramatic public things, and what happened to him could have happened to anyone, but he faced it with dignity and had strength of conviction in his ideals. In that way, I find him more of a role model than someone like Washington, who is too much larger-than-life for me to identify with, really.

Thank you! Λ.Λ
Agreed. I feel like Washington sort of disappeared behind all of the nineteenth century desperation to create an American myth, and now he's almost at the point of being this giant caricature.

No way. You are amazing. I knew exactly who this was the instant I saw it on the thumbnail! I LOVE the American Revolution. Poor Nathan Hale. I adore the noose; it's so prominent. Also, the British look EVIL. And I guess the select few right there were, for executing such a wonderful man...
This is SO COOL. I'm totally watching you.

Oh, thank you so much!
On the other hand, American Revolution nerds unite! Nathan Hale was just *so* amazing and urgh, I cannot describe how much I love him.
But I'm glad you liked the pic.

I love that tree, honestly, I cannot get over how amazing it looks! The rest of the picture is fantastic, but trees have always been a sore point, that and feet... So, I am showering praise at the wonderful twists and the way it is part of the picture but goes out of the frame, and everything about how the leaves are on the other side to give it balance.
Great picture, and amazing tree!

Thanks! I'm glad you like it.
I have a bit of a thing for trees. I think it's the texture of the bark and how the gnarly-ness can be so freaky or so seductive...
Yeah, I also find that feet are a sore point in drawing (although, honestly I've rather a bit of a foot phobia, so I don't think I'll make any progress in that department anytime soon, haha).

There is a reason why I'm watching you. I feel I've said this before. Still, THERE IS A REASON I'M WATCHING YOU AND IT IS THIS.
Beautifully done. Poor Hale; he's always struck me as being singularly brave and a tad bit tragic. I love the humanity in his expression, juxtaposed with the shadowed, unnatural-looking faces of the Lobsters in the background (except one of the foremost of them, who looks rather upset himself). And I really love the way you drew the plants, and the little sprig of leaves and the like around the border. And how the noose is so prominent in the picture. Poor, dear chap. β₯

Good gods, thank you.
Agreed, there is something particularly Romantic about Hale that you don't quite find in any of the other figures of the Revolution. I mean you've got all these people like Washington (who was supposedly one hell of a dynamic figure, even if his military leadership was *ahem* a tad questionable) and Paine and Jefferson and Franklin who have ridiculously crazy voices calling out tyranny and wrong doing, and who are witty and passionate in their writings, and then there's Hale who is sort of underrated in comparison, and whose only remembered words are some lines that may have been snatched from a play. It's so....forgive me for going all Les MisΓ©rables in a word-vomit on the American Revolution, but he's a bit like Prouvaire, with the whole last verse thing going on. It just makes him so intriguing and rather sad to contemplate.
