They are considered a pest over here for interbreeding, many are culled. i love watching there antics

Great shot!
Unfortunately where I live I only get to see them in winter plumage. They're still cute, but I'd love to see a blue-billed guy in person.

THEDOC4 In reply to Cillana [2006-10-18 15:52:28 +0000 UTC]
Thankyou!!!!!! thats very unfortunate for you as they are so vibrant in full summer colours they are actually culling them over here as they are having a impact on interbreeding with other species
which is a real shame as they are a very lively little bird.

Great shot, I love these ducks. Weren't they trying to exterminate them at one point because of mating with the white-headed duck? They still seem to be around...

Thankyou!!!!!! yes i've heard that myself but know of only one water where they have actually shot them and cut the numbers, i doubt it would happen where i photgraph these as its a very public place and
don't think it would go down well. i dont know the implications of them being here, i just sit on the fence and enjoy what i see and photograph really.

I too agree with everyone the bill looks stuck on. They are very funny though when they go on the defensive as Dave says. The head bobs up and down at such a speed you can't help but laugh at it hahahaha!!

I hope it's not tiresome that so many of us write essentially to say "Another fabulous shot." My goal is to learn to capture wild things as well as you do. And thanks again for the generous sharing of info. Cheers.

That's exactly what I thought as soon as I saw the photo, it does look stuck on doesn't it? Really made me smile when I saw you'd written just that.
They really do look like that though. Very nice photo of him.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I am in with Mr Ruddy Duck! My Musk Duck sends his love too! Beautiful capture as always Dave
He is so crazy looking - that blue bill - it is so beautiful and amazing that nature can produce such a colour...and, his bill is so big especially when you compare it with my Musk Duck and other ducks - it looks flase - he really is like Daffy
I love him. You always capture such true colours and beautiful clarity. I don't know what it is, but the position of his eye looks crazy - he looks like a cyclops! I just can't get over the colours.
I need your camera!!!

THEDOC4 In reply to Zarafa [2006-08-07 11:19:06 +0000 UTC]
I new you would appreciate this one there clearly is a closer relation to the Musk Duck than to any other types i've come across. the tail and bill especially and the diving behaviour. i will certainly try to capture the Ruddy
in the same manner you have in the vertical position if i can and the crazy eye is so true!!!!! this shot makes him look so cute and placid but if i can capture the defensive behaviour when he does the head and neck trick!!!!
then you will be in for a treat, the tufts pop out like horns and he cleary tries to intimidate me off, very funny and comical. i have on a few occasions seen them sort of fly more like running on water which i would love to capture
but im gonna need a heap of luck for that shot

Lovely photo as ever David.
Nice looking little fella, but I seem to remember them not being to popular due to them interbreeding with a native species and erroding the gene pool.

Thanks!!!!!! ye i've heard pretty much the same about them. at least the effects aren't as damaging as the impact the grey squirrels had on the native Reds say. i know very little about them except they make
great subjects to shoot
