Description **UPDATE: In my haste to show off I sort of just slapped together the original image. I thought Id put a little more effort in to displaying it. Hope this brings it together a bit more.

Here's something I'm extra proud to present. I had a little time off a few weeks ago so I was actually able to sit down and draw a little for myself....a rare treat. I'm rusty as all hell but had a lot of fun trying to shake a little of that off.

What you see here are 6 separate drawings that I threw together in to this haphazard montage. They weren't drawn with the intent of having them in the same image but I wanted to see how they played off of one another just for fun.

By far, the coolest aspect of these pieces is that my dear friend, Sean Galloway, a.k.a CHEEKS
did the colors!!!! I am Sean's biggest fan and his work obviously has a big influence on my own. To have him help me with these was beyond awesome. As far as I'm concerned, everything that's cool here is as a result of what he did. He brought them to life.

I'm currently trying to put together a nice art book in which these will be featured separately along with many others. Ill keep you posted on when that will be. I really hope you guys dig!

You, Tim! It was such a fun colab. Sorry I took so dang long doing it up. Your lines spoke for itself, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to color over your personal work! Really happy you dig it, bud.

pretty cool stuff=] I never knew this was how you did your thing when you drew=] you can definitely see his influence=] Glad to see he respected it enough to color it=] this is damn good work, it would have been good without his colors too, so don't down yourself man. Would love to see more stuff like this, I like your takes on the characters=]

Thanks! Ive been going this direction in my own personal work for some time now. Im really big in to Ragnar, DePins, and especially Cheeks (and all guys in between). Rob Haynes was the one who set me on this path though. I got to watch him develope his style when he was my room mate for a few years. Evidentally his sensibilities wore off on me. My biggest challenge is to NOT let the influence of these guys take over too much. The last thing I want to be is a cheap imitiation.

I hear that, I think we've all had that struggle at some point in out growth as artists. Like i said, I see the influence, but you're doing your thing, so thats why I'd love to see more and more and more, you do damn cool stuff on your own as well as the inking over others=]

These are really good, glad you could find sometime for yourself...I like them all, but of all of them I like Cap the best he looks ready to take on some baddies

I would surely be interested in purchasing an sketchbook from you...would you be offering a special page for an original sketch with purchase...I know your plate is full with your everyday slinging of ink, but I think it would be a cool feature to add to your sketchbook

Hey Townsend, this is a great explanation for their wonderful inks, its beautiful design
I think today's inkers should devote some time to design,
more pencil to shine after that
I love the knots of the fingers to the your characters!
your book will be a beautiful book

Don't mind me, but...

I can understand that there's a difference between keeping the refrigerator full and purchasing a dream. If you love to get into design work... are you actually trying?

I am asking because you are supposed to be one of the most famous inkers who ever came to fame in superhero business. I'd never think of you as a designer. Did you ever thought about a different self-marketing?

Have you ever made up characters yourself? Not that I would not like Spidey and the bunch... but what about your own unique stuff?

Greets,
Ambro

TimTownsend In reply to ambroggio [2009-01-17 20:01:22 +0000 UTC]

Im not actively trying due to my location. I live in Orlando, Florida and have no plans of moving to Cali' any time in the near future. Thats where this type of design work is. Ive got TONS of friends in the biz' so I know the ins and outs. Im a realist. As for the inking, I love it and its taken me far but I only get a certain amount of satisfaction from it. I started out as a penciler and would like to get back to my roots some day. Dont get me wrong, Im not complaining at all. Im a firm believer in putting up or shutting up.

Ive got my own stuff that Im working on behind the scenes...but its more just goofing off than anything...just stuff for my art book. Inking pays the bills around here.

ambroggio In reply to TimTownsend [2009-01-18 11:29:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it definitely seems like you had put
sufficient thought into the issue, so no more
impertinent questions from my side.

And I think the art book is a very, very nice idea.

ambroggio In reply to ??? [2009-01-17 14:46:55 +0000 UTC]

you should draw more.

the fingers (especially on Spidey) are a bit hard to separate visually due to their sharp, ragged egdes. Aside that you certainly got a sense for dynamic and clear poses.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimTownsend In reply to ambroggio [2009-01-17 18:17:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I know what you mean. Spidey was the first one I did and is a lot clunkier than the others. Each one got progressivly more fluid and less forced. I think the order I did them in was Spidey, Cap, Iron Man, Hellboy, Mark from Ken from Gatchaman, and Batman.
