Description Here we have a really amazing piece of art, by the maestro and my good friend, Dave Williams
and myself. Be sure to drop by Dave's gallery to check out the amazing pencils.
A little bit of background. I probably spent as much time on this piece than any in my career. It was the perfect storm. A) I consider Dave to be one of the best of the best our art form has to offer. He's a legitimate genius in my book. It's always a bit nerve wracking to work with someone like this for, essentially, the first time. I dont want to be "the guy that f'ed up Dave's masterpiece.
B) As some of you already know, Ive been dealing with some hand issues. Due to a neck injury a number of months back I was left with some minor nerve damage resulting in a small tremor in my drawing hand. NOT good. Ive spent the last 4 months trying to work through it. Its been a slow-going, frustrating process that had left me burnt out, discouraged, and considering the future of my career in inking. Im happy to say that, due to regular Acupuncture treatements over the last month and a half, my hand seems to have returned to me. Im back to about 95% and feeling much more optimistic about things.
However, I was working on this cover in the midst of the worst of it all. I agonized over every single line. Nothing really flowed for me. The end result was, in my opinion, much stiffer and mechanical looking than Id otherwise have done it. Much of the spontenaety of my lines were sucked away since I had to put so much effort in to my hand control. It took twice as long to do.

Im not saying Im not happy with it. In fact, I think its a very successful piece. I just know that I could have done better and me being the harsh self-critic that I am, all I see are the faults.

The fact that Dave was happy with it brings me endless amounts of joy and more than a little relief. Considering how difficult it was for me to pull off, I consider it a big triumph. I hope you do as well!

Was this drawn before or after the movie? I ask because Professor X looks exactly like Patrick Stewart, so I assume it was after the movie

Needless to say, amazing inking

TimTownsend In reply to tanglong [2008-09-25 16:46:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the Acupuncture seems to have worked miracles. There was no pain involved in my hand issue though. It was just shakiness.

hey buddy great work!!!

tell me something... the white lines in the Prof. x's brain waves are they planned or did you some white after?
(if it's hand inking...?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimTownsend In reply to MangaAngel [2008-09-25 16:47:56 +0000 UTC]

This was all hand inking. The lines through his brain waves are the last thing I did on the piece since I need the white to stand on top of everything else. If you look at the pencils youll see. Thank you!!

Well, you are getting needles stuck in to you...which doest exactly feel good. It hurst a little but no more than getting a shot. If youre having doubts as to whether or not it works, let me assure you from experience, it does.

what amazes me most is the perfect thin white line bordering the psychic circle of Prof-x and then hearing about you accident and hand on top of it makes it awesome in the dictionary sense of the word not Bill and Ted.

glad to hear about the improvement in your condition tim, the acupunture is really helping, thats awesome news.....

this is one of the 5 best things davids ever done, and you did a slam bang, wicked great job inking it. those eyebrows on xavier and the interpretations you made inking his penciled lines are so informative to me, this suckers been hanging up by my desk for a while now, both versions, i study it all the time, hope val knocks the color out on it for a true trifecta.........

Like in life, I think that stress in art strips everything but the essence away. I know I'm one of the people that would love to be able to ink like you on one of your off days. There's a great flow and "classic" solidity of this piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimTownsend In reply to ninjakitsune [2008-09-25 15:58:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yes, I totally agree. Inking is like truth serum. It spills out exactly how youre feeling right there on the page via your lines. If youre up tight and stressed it will show. If youre feeling good and loose, that will show as well. Glad I managed to sneak by on this one!
